The Lead: After losing three-straight one-goal games to Johns Hopkins over the past two seasons, the MIT water polo team took down the Blue Jays, 9-6 on an overcast afternoon in the USA Water Polo Division III Championship Third Place Game. This is the second time MIT has won the third-place game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Hopkins took a quick 1-0 lead at 7:31 before back-to-back goals from junior
Evan Kowal (South Pasadena, Calif.) gave the Engineers a 2-1 lead.

Adam Ivatorov (Rockaway, N.Y) scored at 4:54 in the second to give MIT a two-goal advantage, butÂ
Emerson Sullivan got the Jays to within one at 2:47. Kowal scored his third of the day making it a two-goal MIT lead with 2:20 left in the half. MIT scored two more goals to go up 6-2 but Sullivan scored again with 28 seconds in the half to make it a 6-3 contest.

Ian Raley scored for Hopkins to get the Blue Jays to within one, but Ivatorov scored at 4:17 to put MIT back up by two. Senior
Miller Geschke (Los Altos, Calif.) scored on a five-meter to make it an 8-5 lead, and Ivatorov scored at 2:42 in the fourth to put MIT up four.

- Sullivan scored with 37 seconds left to make it a 9-6 match, but the Engineers held on to take the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- MIT is now 2-1 against JHU in the championship and 14-29 overall. The six goals are the fewest the Engineers have allowed in the championship and the fewest they have allowed against JHU since 2003.

- Geschke finished the year with 70 goals, 49 assists, and 88 steals as he accounted for one goal, one assist, and two steals in the match. The 70 goals are the ninth-most all-time in team history. He finished his career as the program leader in career steals (231) and assists (164) and ranks second all-time in goals with 288. He owns the single-season records in goals in a game (10), steals in a season, assists (56), and has the second, fourth, and ninth most goals in a season.

- Ivatorov finished his first year with 66 goals and recorded 18 multi-goal games and 10 hat tricks. He scored four goals to lead the team and had three steals in the match.
