The Lead: After dropping the first set, the MIT men's volleyball team rebounded to come-from-behind in a five-set thriller against No. 5 Wentworth on Tuesday night in Rockwell Cage. The Engineers handed the Leopards their first loss of the season as MIT moves to 38-6 all-time against Wentworth.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
Set 1: The Leopards jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and held that lead for the entirety of the set. A kill from first-year
Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.) made the score 11-9, but Wentworth would pull away using a 9-4 run to take a 22-15 lead and took set one by a score of 25-16.
-
Set 2: With the score 10-9 in favor of MIT, three-straight Engineers points put the home team up four. Back-to-back kills from Oh put MIT up 16-11 as the Engineers continued to counter any run from the Leopards as a kill from junior
Dylan Ryan (Oviedo, Fla.) sealed the 25-17 set win for the home team.
-
Set 3: Wentworth took a 13-5 lead but a kill from junior
Jack Yurkanin (New Lenox, Ill.) jump-started a 5-0 MIT run to make it a 13-11 set. Ryan tied the set at 17 all with a kill, however Wentworth regained the lead and held on for a 25-22 win.
- Set 4: Back-to-back kills from sophomore
Phillip Johnson (Chandler, Ariz.) and Oh put MIT up 10-5 but the Leopards used a 3-0 run later in the set to get to within three at 13-10. Wentworth pulled to within one at 17-16, however, Oh started a 3-0 run to make it a 20-17 contest as a kill from Yurkanin sealed the fourth set, 25-20, and sent the teams to a decisive fifth set.
- Set 5: MIT kept the momentum going as a kill from Yurkanin put them up 9-5 and forced a Wentworth timeout. The Leopards got to within three, but the Engineers held onto the lead as senior
Bradley Albright (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) sealed the upset win with a kill.
