MIT Falls to WPI, 67-63, in Overtime in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 4 WPI 67, No. 5 MIT 63

- Records: MIT (12-10); WPI (19-4)

- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Harrington Auditorium)

- The Lead: In a back-and-forth game that featured 12 ties and 18 lead changes, No. 4 seeded WPI emerged with a 67-63 overtime victory over No. 5 MIT in the quarterfinals of the NEWMAC Women's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night. Senior Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) led all players with 25 points while classmate Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) produced 14 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- A three-pointer and a layup during the last 1:17 of the first quarter gave WPI a 14-10 edge.

- Following a WPI free throw just 16 seconds into the second quarter, a jumper by senior Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) kicked off a 9-0 burst that put MIT in front, 19-15, at the 5:50 mark. Pieper accounted for seven points during the run. WPI battled back, tying the score at 22 on a layup with 11 seconds remaining before halftime.

- WPI inched out to a five-point lead on two occasions during the third quarter, the last at 34-29 with 4:24 on the clock. However, back-to-back layups by first-year Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) and then a layup by Gallagher put MIT ahead, 35-34. An exchange of baskets followed, resulting in five lead changes as WPI drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to go up 41-39.

- The tight play continued in the fourth quarter until a layup by Antonakakis sparked a 10-0 run which put MIT in front, 54-48 with 55 seconds remaining. Antonakakis provided seven points while Nwogu contributed three during the rally. WPI responded with back-to-back three-pointers, the last with 8.8 seconds left to force overtime.

- After a tie and two lead changes during the early stages of the extra session, a pair of WPI layups gave the hosts a 62-59 edge at the 2:29 mark. A jumper by Nwogu during MIT's next possession kept it within striking distance, however, WPI knocked down a trey with 42 seconds to go. After a series of missed shots, Antonakakis was fouled while attempting a three-pointer with two seconds remaining. She sank the first two shots but MIT couldn't corral the rebound following the intentionally missed third attempt. A foul then sent WPI to charity stripe where it hit both shots with 0.7 seconds on the clock, capturing a 67-63 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Nwogu totaled 11 points and four rebounds coming off the bench while Pieper notched nine points. Senior Annika Sougstad (Mahtomedi, Minn.) grabbed six rebounds as first-year Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) rounded out MIT with four steals and three assists.

- MIT led the way in points off turnovers (19-16) but WPI had the upper hand in rebounds (51-31), second-chance points (12-5), bench scoring (30-13), and points in the paint (34-32).
