Women’s Basketball Wins Sixth Straight Following 69-59 Win Over Emerson

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 69, Emerson College 59

- Records: MIT (10-7, 5-1 NEWMAC); Emerson (7-12, 3-3 NEWMAC)

- Location: Boston, Mass. (Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym)

- The Lead: The MIT women's basketball team extended its winning to streak after defeating NEWMAC foe Emerson College, 69-59, on Saturday. Three players reached double-digits in scoring for the Engineers as senior Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) led the way with 18 points to go along with five rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- After a back-and-forth start, Emerson inched out to a 14-8 lead at the 5:23 mark. Almost a minute later, a layup by senior Annika Sougstad (Mahtomedi, Minn.) sparked an 11-4 run which closed the quarter and put MIT ahead for good.

- The Engineers carried the momentum into the second stanza as their advantage grew to 27-20 after Sougstad's layup with 4:12 on the clock. The Lions responded with a 7-2 burst during the next two minutes. However, MIT countered with a 7-3 spurt as senior Paula Pieper's (Greenville, S.C.) three-pointer right before halftime resulted in a 36-30 advantage.

- The Engineers opened the third quarter with six straight points and maintained a comfortable cushion throughout the frame. A put-back by sophomore Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) increased MIT's lead to 54-41 with 13 seconds to go, but Emerson replied with a three-pointer moments before time expired.

- The Lions scored eight unanswered points to start the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap to 54-49 with 7:19 on the clock. The Engineers quickly responded with baskets by Antonakakis, Pieper, and first-year Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) to create some breathing room. MIT's lead stayed in the double-digits down the stretch, growing to 14 (69-55) courtesy of Sougstad's layup with 1:49 left to play. Emerson wrapped up the scoring with a layup and two free throws during the final 45 seconds.
