MIT Sailing Competes in Two Races Over the Weekend

In what was a challenging weekend for racing due to weather conditions, the MIT sailing team competed in two races over the weekend, with the team grabbing a third-place finish at the Wood Trophy.


NAVY WOMEN'S RACE | Annapolis, Md.
 
-  Racing was canceled for the day on Saturday, giving the teams one day of competition, however, the race committee was unable to get the last race started before the deadline, so the race did not count. At the time, the Engineers were 5-3 and were in 5th of 11 teams.

- There was no racing on Sunday due to weather conditions and safety concerns.
 
- The MIT boat made up of skippers senior John Ped (Portland, Ore.), sophomore Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.), and sophomore Sam Bruce (Severna Park, Md.) with crew junior Abby VanLonkhuyzen (Yarmouth, Maine), senior Jeremy McCulloch (San Diego, Calif.), first-year Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.), first-year Nicholas Abate (Kemah, Texas), senior Maaya Prasad (Yorktown, Va.) and first-year Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas) took third overall in the event. They went 5-2 on the day earning victories over Harvard, Northeastern, Northwestern, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
 
 
 
MIT TEAM RACE INVITE | Cambridge, Mass. | 6th, and 9th of Nine
- Racing in cold and challenging conditions on Saturday, the Engineers Second boat won three races to finish sixth overall. The boat featured skippers first-year Max Katz-Christy (Cambridge, Mass.), first-year Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas), senior Julia Wyatt (Sudbury, Mass.), sophomore Matthew Elliot (Waterford, Mich.) and crew, junior Wendy Wu (Andover, Mass.), first-year Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.), senior Zoe Fisher (River Forest, Ill.) and sophomore Karen Liberman (Sao Paulo, Brazil). The team earned victories over Coast Guard, MIT 1, and Roger Williams and won a sail off with the Bears to earn the sixth-place finish.

- The Engineers 1 boat of skippers senior Raymond Huffman (Manhasset, N.Y.), sophomore Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.), graduate student Charles Lindsay (West Palm Beach, Fla.), and junior Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.) with a crew of junior Soleh Anderlini (Washington, D.C.), junior Sarah Aaronson (Ashland, Ore.), first-year Yitian Zhu (Katy, Texas) and sophomore Sophie Yang (Wynnewood, Pa.) finished sixth.
 

UP NEXT:
- The Engineers are back in the water next weekend, Saturday, March 19 – Sunday, March 20 as they will race at the Southern New England Team Race and the Harvard Race. MIT will also play host to the Geiger Trophy.
