Sailing Wins Geiger Trophy, Also Competes at Harvard and Southern New England Team Race

The Lead: The MIT sailing team took home first in the Geiger Trophy while also competing in the Harvard Team Invite and the Southern New England Team Race.  
 
GEIGER TROPHY | Cambridge, Mass. | 1st of 8
 
-  The Engineers team of skippers senior Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), first-year Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), senior Kaila Pfrang (Suffolk, N.Y.), and crew first-year Shayne Bersin, (Port Washington, N.Y.) junior Grace Mao (Overland Park, Kan.), first-year Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.), and senior Maile Jim (Honolulu, Hawaii) took home first with a 17-4 record.
 
- The team went a perfect 7-0 in round one, followed by a 4-3 record in round two, and finished up with a 6-1 record in the final round.
 
SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND TEAM RACE | New London, Conn. | 8th of 10
 
- Senior John Ped (Portland, Ore.), sophomore Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.), and sophomore Sam Bruce (Severna Park, Md.) skippered the boat with a crew of junior Abby VanLonkhuyzen (Yarmouth, Maine), first-year Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.) and senior Maaya Prasad (Yorktown, Va.) to an eighth-place finish going 5-13. The team rebounded after going 1-8 in round one to finish with a 4-5 record in round two.
 
HARVARD INVITE | Cambridge, Mass. | 6th and 8th of 8

- The Engineers 1 boat with skippers junior Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.), first-year Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas), and senior Julia Wyatt (Sudbury, Mass.) and crew sophomore Sophie Yang (Wynnewood, Pa.), junior Wendy Wu (Andover, Mass.), senior Veronika Silkin (Johnston, Iowa), senior Zoe Fisher (River Forest, Ill.) and sophomore Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.) finished sixth with 7-6 record. The team opened with a 4-3 record but went 0-4 in the round one sailoff. They then went 2-1 in the consolation round one and 1-2 in the consolation round two.

- The Engineers 2 boat of skippers first-year Max Katz-Christy (Cambridge, Mass.), graduate student Charles Lindsay (West Palm Beach, Fla.), sophomore Matthew Elliott (Waterford, Mich.), and senior Raymond Huffman (Manhasset, N.Y.) and crew of junior Sarah Aaronson (Ashland, Ore.), sophomore Karen Liberman (Sao Paulo, Brazil), junior Elissa Ito (Tokyo, Japan) and first-year Yitan Zhu (Katy, Texas) finished in eighth.

UP NEXT:

- Next week will be a busy week of racing for the Engineers as the team will be participating in four events. MIT will host the Staake Trophy Team Race while also participating in the BU Team Race, the Duplin Team Race, and the St. Mary's Women's Team Race. All of the events will take place from Saturday, March 26 to Sunday, March 27.
