The Lead: Erin Jayne scored on a feed from
Courtney Kaskey with 30 seconds remaining in regulation and the duo repeated that performance 37 seconds into overtime, helping Babson College capture a 17-16 victory over MIT in NEWMAC women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. Juniors
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) and
Delaney Goetz (Rockville, Md.) along with first-year
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) each posted five points for the Engineers while Jayne and Kaskey both registered six points for the Beavers.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT built a 4-1 lead after five minutes elapsed as Gambino and Goetz both scored and assisted on each other's goals. Babson countered with its own 4-1 burst, tying the game at five at the end of the quarter.
Claudia Dodge and Jayne scored twice, with both converting a free-position shot.
Â
- The Engineers controlled the action in the second stanza as they outscored the Beavers, 5-2. First-year
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) contributed two goals, including a blast with eight seconds remaining that gave MIT a 10-7 lead at halftime.
Â
- MIT's advantage gradually grew to 13-8 following a free-position goal by junior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) at the 6:30 mark of the third quarter. Sparked by an extra-player goal from Kaskey, Babson generated six unanswered goals, taking a 14-13 edge courtesy of a free-position goal by Jayne at the 10:33 mark of the fourth quarter.
Â
- The Engineers ended their scoring drought with 6:02 on the clock when Gambino set up Pyon for a player-down goal. Rabenold redirected a feed from Goetz, quickly putting MIT in front, and then an extra-player free-position goal by sophomore
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) created a 16-14 margin with 2:50 left to play. Following a save by
Kathleen Murphy, Dodge buried a free-position goal with 1:19 on the clock. Babson won the ensuing draw and following a timeout, Kaskey found Jayne for the equalizer with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. In the extra session,
Clare Connolly came up with the draw control, helping set up the game-winning Jayne-Kaskey collaboration.
