Sailing Wins Seahawk Team Race, Finishes Second at Staake Team Race

The Lead: Coming off a very successful training trip, the MIT sailing team won the Seahawk Women's Team Race and earned a second-place finish at the Staake Team Race. The second-place finish at the Staake Race qualified the coed team for the CoEd Team Racing New England's at Harvard in two weeks.

- With the second-place finish, the coed team has qualified for the Coed Team Racing New England's at Harvard in two weeks.
 
- MIT held the lead after day one with Northeastern as the Engineers finished with a 15-5 record, finishing second after losing the first-place tiebreaker to the University of Rhode Island.
 
- The Engineers were skippered by senior John Ped (Portland, Ore.), sophomore Sam Bruce (Severna Park, MD.) and sophomore Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.) with a crew of junior Abby VanLonkhuyzen (Yarmouth, Maine), senior Jeremy McCulloch (San Diego, Calif.), senior Maaya Prasad (Yorktown, Pa.), first-year Nicholas Abate (Kemah, Texas), first-year Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas) and first-year Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.).
 
- In the opening two rounds, MIT posted an 8-2 record and followed that up with a 3-2 record in round three and a 4-1 record in the fourth round, falling to Rhode Island.

-  Competing against all of the best teams in the Mid-Atlantic Region, the Engineers were able to come out on top for an important out-of-conference victory.
 
- The Engineers went 14-4 over the two-day race, posting a 7-3 record in round one, a 4-1 record in the Gold 6 and finished with a perfect 3-0 record in the Final 4.
 
- MIT was skippered by senior Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), first-year Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) and senior Kaila Pfrang Suffolk, N.Y.) while the crew was comprised of first-year Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.), senior Veronika Silkin (Johnston, Iowa), first-year Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.Y.) and senior Maile Jim (Honolulu, Hawaii).
 
JOSEPH R. DUPLIN TROPHY | Medford, Mass. | 5th of 8

- The Engineers finished fifth with Tufts in an unbreakable tie in the silver fleet as both teams finished with a 4-6 record.

- MIT opened racing with a 2-5 record but rebounded with a 2-1 record in the final round.

- The skippers for MIT were senior Julia Wyatt (Sudbury, Mass.), first-year Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas) and junior Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.) and the crew was sophomore Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.), junior Wendy Wu (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Sophie Yang (Wynnewood, Pa.).

BOSTON UNIVERSITY TEAM RACE | Cambridge, Mass. | 6th of 6

- MIT finished sixth overall with a boat skippered by sophomore Matthew Elliot (Waterford, Mich.), first-year Max Katz-Christy (Cambridge, Mass.) and graduate student Charles Lindsay (West Palm Beach, Fla.) with a crew of junior Elissa Ito (Tokyo, Japan), junior Sarah Aaronson (Ashland, Ore.) and first-year Yitan Zhu (Katy, Texas).

- The team finished with a 4-16 record.

- The Engineers will host both the Marchiando Trophy Team Race and the Dellenbaugh Team Race next week, Saturday, April 2 – Sunday, April 3. The Engineers will also be competing at the BU Trophy.
