Sailing Opens Spring Season at Harvard and Sharpe Trophy Team Race

The MIT Sailing team opened the 2022 spring season with two races over the weekend. The Engineers competed in both the Women's Race hosted by Harvard and the Sharpe Trophy Team Race hosted by Brown. 

WOMEN'S TEAM RACE AT HARVARD | Cambridge, Mass.
 
-  The Engineers 1 boat, comprised of skippers senior Kaila Pfrang (Suffolk, N.Y.), senior Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.) and first-year Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) and crew senior Maile Jim (Honolulu, Hawaii), senior Veronika Silkin (Johnston, Iowa), first-year Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.) and junior Grace Mao (Overland Park, Kan.) took third overall in the event. MIT posted a 3-2 record in rounds one and two, scoring wins over Brown and Dartmouth and the Engineers second boat. They wrapped up the event with an impressive 4-1 record in the third round, notching wins over Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, and the second MIT boat.
 
- The MIT second boat of skippers junior Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.), senior Lulu Russell (Marion, Mass.) and first-year Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas), and crew sophomore Sophie Yang (Wynnewood, Pa.), first-year Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.), senior Zoe Fisher (River Forest, Ill.) and junior Wendy Wu (Andover, Mass.) took sixth overall, winning races over Harvard in round one and Dartmouth in round two.
 
 
SHARPE TROPHY TEAM RACE | Providence, R.I.
 
- The Engineers took seventh overall in the event, earning a victory over Northeastern. The MIT boat rotated skippers sophomore Sam Bruce (Severna Park, Md.), sophomore Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.), and senior John Ped (Portland, Ore.) while senior Maaya Prasad (Yorktown, Va.), first-year Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas), first-year Nicholas Abate (Kemah, Texas), first year Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.), junior Abigail VanLonkhuyzen (Yarmouth, Maine), and senior Jeremy McCulloch (San Diego, Calif.) made up the crew.

UP NEXT:
- MIT will take part in three different races next week, from March 12-13. They will race at the Navy's Women Race, the Wood Trophy at Harvard and host the MIT Team Race.
