Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Wins Fourth Straight After 18-8 Victory at Coast Guard

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 18, U.S. Coast Guard Academy 8

- Records: MIT (7-4, 4-1 NEWMAC); Coast Guard (8-4, 4-1 NEWMAC)

- Location: New London, Conn. (Cadet Memorial Field)

- The Lead: The MIT women's lacrosse team opened the game with a 6-0 run and never looked back as it went on to defeat the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 18-8, on Wednesday night. Sophomore Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) powered the Engineers with five goals and one assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Arterburn set up junior Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) exactly 16 seconds after the opening draw and then she found the back of the net at the 9:17 mark. First-year Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) connected on a feed from classmate Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) as senior Naomi Lutz (Northbrook, Ill.) buried a free-position shot with eight seconds left in the quarter.

- MIT's lead grew to 6-0 following blasts from Pyon and junior Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) during the first three minutes of the second stanza. Coast Guard ended the shutout at the 10:25 mark with a player-advantage goal and then both teams traded goals during the next 52 seconds, moving the score to 7-2. The Engineers closed the frame with goals by Rabenold and Pyon.

- The Bears put together a 3-1 spurt, narrowing the gap to 10-5 with 8:38 on the clock in the third quarter. Less than a minute later, Arterburn buried the first of back-to-back strikes, sparking another six-goal run which was capped by junior Grace Ann Carlson's (Daniel Island, S.C.) goal just 26 seconds into the fourth quarter. A defensive battle ensued until Coast Guard broke through with 5:28 left to play. The Bears added two more goals during the next three minutes, making the score 16-8. Junior Emma Tauckus (Manhasset, N.Y.) was a factor in MIT's final two goals as she set up Carlson with 1:16 remaining and scored the last goal with 18 ticks left.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Pyon totaled four goals, one assist, four groundballs, and four draw controls while Rabenold produced three goals, one assist, and four draw controls. Lutz finished with two goals and one assist. In net, senior Elena Boal (West Windsor, N.J.) made eight saves.
