The Lead: MIT built an early lead and maintained a small cushion en route to a 15-9 victory over Springfield College in a NEWMAC women's lacrosse game on Saturday. Junior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) powered the Engineers with six goals, one assist, and three draw controls.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT gradually built a 4-1 lead in the opening frame. First-year
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) put the Engineers on the board with a free-position goal after four minutes expired and Rabenold followed with an unassisted marker midway through the quarter. Springfield scored 1:14 later, however, the Engineers replied with goals from junior
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) and first-year
Katie Hall (New York, N.Y.). The Pride converted a free-position attempt, narrowing the gap to 4-2 with 3:16 remaining. Rabenold notched another goal, but Springfield found the back of the net with just over a minute left in the quarter.
Â
- Rabenold completed the hat trick after 1:32 elapsed in the second stanza. A defensive battle ensued until sophomore
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) broke through, increasing the Engineers' advantage to 7-3 at the 5:06 mark. The Pride ended their scoring drought 44 seconds later and then trimmed its deficit to 7-5 following a free-position goal with 20 seconds to go. Rabenold corralled the ensuing draw control as first-year
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) set up Gambino with five seconds on the clock.
Â
- Flusche carried the momentum into the third quarter as she scored 37 seconds after the draw. Springfield recorded back-to-back goals, cutting its deficit in half (9-7) with 6:58 on the clock. MIT countered with two goals during the last three minutes to create some breathing room. Hall earned an assist on a goal from Rabenold while Gambino scored a player-down goal with 28 seconds remaining.
Â
- The Pride found the back of the net early in the fourth quarter; however, senior
Naomi Lutz (Northbrook, Ill.) buried a player-down free-position goal at the 11:39 mark. Springfield recorded what proved to be its final goal of the game 18 seconds later, making the score 12-9. MIT slowly pulled away as a goal from Flusche and back-to-back strikes by Rabenold secured the victory.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Gambino tallied three goals and one assist while Flusche finished with two goals and one assist. Hall and Pyon both posted one goal and one assist as Hall added three groundballs. Sophomores
Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) and
Katie Bell (Radnor, Pa.) generated three and two caused turnovers, respectively, while senior
Elena Boal (West Windsor, N.J.) collected nine saves.
