The Lead: After a back-and-forth start, MIT rattled off 10 unanswered goals before going on to defeat Wheaton College, 20-10, in a NEWMAC women's lacrosse game on Wednesday night. Junior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) powered the Engineers with six goals and an assist while
Darien Webb and
Avonlea LeBeau both recorded four-point performances. Webb posted four goals, including the first three of the game, as LeBeau totaled three goals and an assist.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Webb buried a free-position shot 2:40 into the game, setting off an exchange of goals which resulted in a natural hat trick and a 3-2 edge with 4:31 left in the quarter. MIT junior
Lindsay Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the game when she redirected a feed from Rabenold with a player advantage two minutes later. Junior
Emma Tauckus (Manhasset, N.Y.) corralled the ensuing draw control and sprinted to net, giving the Engineers a lead it would not relinquish. First-year
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) then increased MIT's cushion to 5-3 courtesy of a free-position goal with 49 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Â
- The Engineers controlled the action in the second stanza as they rattled off seven straight goals. The Lyons ended their scoring drought at the 4:09 mark when LeBeau connected on a feed from
Erin Ortega. MIT countered with goals from Gambino and Rabenold to enter halftime with a 14-4 advantage.
Â
- Junior
Delaney Goetz (Rockville, Md.), who earned an assist on Rabenold's goal right before halftime, set up Rabenold and Gambino during the early stages of the third quarter. Tauckus followed with an unassisted marker, extending the lead to 17-4 with 10:48 on the clock. Over a minute later,
Brooke Harvey scored a free-position goal, kicking off a 3-1 burst by Wheaton. The Engineers replied with a goal from Rabenold that was set up by Gambino moments before the quarter ended, moving the score to 19-7.
Â
- Despite the deficit the Lyons continued to attack, outscoring MIT 3-1 during the fourth quarter.
Mia Murray recorded a goal and an assist, the first points of her career, as LeBeau also produced a goal and an assist.
Â
