The Lead: MIT rattled off five unanswered goals in the second quarter, helping propel it to an 18-7 victory over Smith College in a NEWMAC women's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. First-year
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) tallied four goals, one assist, four groundballs, and three caused turnovers for the Engineers while
Stella Alphas generated two goals, one assist, 10 draw controls, and two caused turnovers for the Pioneers.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT gradually built a 4-0 lead in the first quarter as four different players found the back of the net. Junior
Delaney Goetz (Rockville, Md.) earned two assists in the frame as she set up classmate
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) after 38 seconds elapsed and found first-year
Julianne Flusche (New York, N.Y.) for the Engineers' fourth goal at the 3:35 mark. Smith ended the shutout three minutes later courtesy of a solo effort by Alphas.
Â
- The Engineers' balanced scoring continued in the second stanza as five players each contributed a goal. Pyon picked up two points in the quarter as she earned an assist on a strike by junior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) and then connected on a pass from senior
Naomi Lutz (Northbrook, Ill.), giving MIT a 9-1 halftime lead.
Â
- A solo effort from
Jennie Arancio ended the Pioneers' scoring drought 2:18 into the third quarter while a free-position shot by
Gia Arancio made the score 9-3 at the 6:35 mark. MIT generated three quick goals by sophomores
Nora Donnelly (Ridgewood, N.J.) and
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) as well as junior
Grace Ann Carlson (Daniel Island, S.C.). Gia Arancio capped the quarter with an unassisted marker with 46 seconds remaining.
Â
- After a back-and-forth start to the fourth quarter, a goal by Jennie Arancio narrowed the gap to 14-7 with 10:45 left to play. The Engineers replied with four straight goals to close out the game.
