- The Lead: With six event wins and two top-20 performances, the MIT women's track and field team opened its indoor home schedule with a tri-meet victory over the University of Southern Maine and Bates College. The Engineers finished with 60 points, followed by Southern Maine at 55 and Bates with 42 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In the 800 meters, junior
Gillian Roeder (Delmar, N.Y.) won the event in a time of 2:18.65 as her converted time of 2:17.07 ranks fifth nationally. Sophomore
Christina Crow (Mercer Island, Wash.) crossed in second at 2:22.04 and is No. 16 in the country with a converted time of 2:20.42.

- First-year
Krystal Montgomery (San Jose, Calif.) took first in the 600 meters in 1:39.79, along with a fourth-place finish by first-year
Stella Gassman (Larchmont, N.Y.) in a time of 1:49.51. Sophomore
Marina Miller (Bel Air, Md.) placed second in the 200 at 27.02, while junior
Madeline Hon (Manhasset, N.Y.) in fourth in 27.26 seconds. Hon was also third in 60 meters in a time of 8.28 seconds. In the 60-meter hurdles, first-year
Katie Kempff (St. Charles, Ill.) crossed in second at 9.78 seconds.

- Kempff also captured the high jump with a mark of five feet, 2.25 inches to lead three MIT scorers in the event. Reigning NCAA outdoor national champion
Kimmy McPherson (San Diego, Calif.) was second with a height of five feet, 0.25 inches, while junior
Tolu Akinbo (Naperville, Ill.) finished fourth in the same height.

- Sophomore
Alexis Boykin (Clayton, Ohio) won both the shot put and the weight throw to kick off her home schedule. In the shot put, she posted a throw of 44 feet, 1.25 inches as she was followed in fourth place by sophomore
Emily Ball (Des Moines, Iowa) at 38 feet, 1.5 inches. Boykin took the weight throw at 57 feet, seven inches, with Ball again in fourth at 44 feet, 7.5 inches.

Nony Otu Ugwu (Katy, Texas) won the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, 1.5 inches, along with senior
Laena Tieng (Kent, Wash.) in second at 35 feet, 3.75 inches.

- In the pole vault,
Hailey Surace (Snohomish, Wash.) finished in second as she cleared a height of 10 feet, 11.5 inches. Junior
Emma Martin (North Andover, Mass.) led two MIT scorers in the long jump as she was second with a leap of 16 feet, 1.75 inches. Tieng was third in the event as she posted a distance of 16 feet, one inch.
