No. 7 Engineers Post Three Top-Five National Marks at BU and Gordon Kelly Invite

THE BASICS:

- Location: BU Track and Tennis Center (Boston, Mass.) and the Johnson Indoor Track (Cambridge, Mass.)

- The Lead: Behind three top-five national marks and four event victories overall, the No. 7 ranked MIT women's track and field team competed at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University and the Gordon Kelly Invitational at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY:

- In the 400 meters, graduate student Sonia Purohit (Branchburg, N.J.) won her heat in a personal-best time of 59.21 seconds. In the 4x400 relay, the team of junior Madeline Hon (Manhasset, N.Y.), first-year Shreya Kalyan (Troy, Mich.), sophomore Marina Miller (Bel Air, Md.) and junior Julia Howarth (Barrington, R.I.) nearly broke the MIT school record as they crossed a time of 3:49.60. That time was just .32 seconds shy of the top time in MIT history and is ranked No. 3 in the country.

- Howarth led five Engineers in the 800 meters as she ran a personal-best time of 2:13.99 in just her second collegiate 800 race. Her time is currently No. 10 in the country. First-year Krystal Montgomery (San Jose, Calif.) finished in 2:19, followed by first-year Erin Hovendon (Hendersonville, N.C.) at 2:21.59 and first-year Stella Gassman (Larchmont, N.Y.) at 2:24.01. Junior Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) won her heat of the 800 with a time of 2:22.68, which took nearly four seconds off her previous PR. The times were also collegiate bests for Montgomery, Hovendon and Gassman.

- Junior Gillian Roeder (Delmar, N.Y.) took another 2.59 seconds off her mile time as she posted a personal-best mark of 4:52.78 to solidify her hold on the No. 4 spot in the nation. Sophomore Christina Crow (Mercer Island, Wash.) also competed in the mile, posting a time of 5:05.83.

- In the final event of the day with the 3,000 meters, junior Sarah Bentley (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) led a group of six Engineers that ran times that rank in the top 50 nationally and were all personal collegiate bests. Bentley posted a time of 9:56.28 and is No. 24 in the country, followed by senior Kirsi Rajagopal (Harrison, N.Y.) under 10 minutes at 9:58.84. Junior Archana Mohandas (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) finished in 10:00.20, with first-year Lexi Fernandez (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) at 10:02.02 and first-year Katherine Sanderson (West Hartford, Conn.) with a time of 10:05.36. Senior Einat Gavish (Newton, Mass.) was the final MIT runner in the top 50, running a time of 10:05.67.

- Wrapping up the competition at BU on Saturday afternoon was the distance medley relay as the top MIT team of Crow, Purohit, Howarth and Roeder finished in a time of 11:45.22 and is ranked No. 2 in the country.

HOW IT HAPPENED AT THE GORDON KELLY INVITATIONAL:
