The Lead: No. 3 seeded MIT outscored No. 6 U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 25-15, in the fourth quarter en route to a 77-66 victory in the quarterfinals of the NEWMAC Women's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night. One of four players to reach double-digits in scoring, sophomore
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) produced 21 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals for the Engineers.
Lily Mika powered the Bears with 13 points while adding five rebounds and three steals.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT gradually built an 11-2 lead after a three-pointer by sophomore
Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) at the 4:33 mark. Coast Guard went on to outscore the Engineers, 9-4, during the next 2:16 as buckets by
Kelly Hagerty bookended the burst. Berman quickly replied with another trey to create an 18-11 lead at the end of the frame.
Â
- The Bears used a jumper and a three-pointer by
Jacqueline Ward as well as a layup by Hagerty to tie the game at 18 after 1:28 elapsed in the second stanza. Sparked by a layup from first year
Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.), MIT generated a 13-5 run as two free throws by junior
Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) increased the margin to 31-23 with 4:08 on the clock. Coast Guard chipped away at the deficit as
Glory Blethen's jumper brought the visitors within 35-31 at halftime.
Â
- Harrington opened the third quarter with a layup. However, seven straight points by Mika fueled a 20-8 run which resulted in a 51-43 advantage with 2:02 left. During the final 85 seconds, MIT rattled off nine unanswered points, capped by two Nwogu free throws which put the Engineers back in front.
Â
- The first 1:24 of the fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair as there were five lead changes and a tie. Two free throws by
Julia Mann gave the Bears a 57-56 lead, however, a layup by Nwogu put the hosts ahead for good and kicked off a 16-6 run that spanned six minutes. Coast Guard's
Kira Wood buried a three-pointer to bring it within 72-66 with 1:31 remaining. Following a missed layup by MIT and two unsuccessful free throws by the Bears, sophomore
Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) knocked down a jumper with 38 seconds to go. The Engineers then closed out the game with a 3-of-4 performance at the charity stripe.
