The Lead: MIT put together a 6-0 run during the last 20 minutes of regulation to pull away for a 17-8 victory over Babson College in a NEWMAC women's lacrosse game on Saturday. Senior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) powered the Engineers' attack with six goals and one assist.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT gradually built a 4-0 lead in the opening frame. Junior
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) put the Engineers on the board after 3:08 elapsed and then sophomore
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) buried back-to-back free-position shots at the 6:52 and 4:44 marks. Rabenold's solo effort increased MIT's cushion over two minutes later. Babson, however, ended the shutout with 1:24 on the clock.
Â
- Just 28 seconds into the second stanza, Rabenold redirected a feed from sophomore
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) to give the visitors a 5-1 advantage. The Beavers replied with a pair of quick strikes but a free-position shot by Pyon created some breathing room with 8:01 on the clock. Babson once again came within two (6-4) courtesy of a free-position shot but the Engineers rattled off three straight goals. Rabenold started the rally with 4:40 on the clock and then Arterburn scored on a feed from senior
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) 32 seconds later. Arterburn returned the favor as she set up Gambino with 42 seconds remaining. Babson capped the scoring with three seconds left, making the margin 9-5 at halftime.
Â
- The Beavers found the back of the net early in the third quarter, however, first year
Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) and Pyon both buried free-position shots. Babson recorded the next two goals, narrowing the gap to 11-8 at the 4:44 mark. This was as close as it would get as Thomas found Rabenold exactly 34 seconds later, sparking MIT's pivotal six-goal scoring burst.
Â
- In the fourth quarter, Rabenold was a factor in three goals as she scored twice and earned an assist on a strike by Pyon. Gambino netted two goals while Flusche earned a pair of assists.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Gambino and Pyon both finished with three goals and one assist while Flusche registered two goals and two assists. Arterburn contributed four draw controls as graduate student
Christine Padalino (Potomac, Md.) collected four groundballs. Junior
Katie Bell (Radnor, Pa.) bolstered the defense with three caused turnovers and two groundballs.
Â
- In net, first year
Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) made four saves in the first half while senior
Abigail Kolyer (Manhasset, N.Y.) closed out the game with six saves.
Â
- This was MIT's first win over Babson since 2018 and the largest margin of victory as the Engineers' previous wins were decided by three goals or less.
