The Lead: A four-goal run during the second quarter gave MIT a lead it would not relinquish as it went on to defeat nationally ranked No. 15 Bowdoin College in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Wednesday night. Senior
Abigail Kolyer (Manhasset, N.Y.) amassed 17 saves for the Engineers in the complete-game effort.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT scored two early goals and then extended its lead courtesy of a free-position shot by first year
Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) at the 5:52 mark. Bowdoin ended the shutout over two minutes later, but Thomas set up senior
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) to give the Engineers a 4-1 lead. The Polar Bears responded by scoring two goals in a span of 45 seconds to close out the quarter.
Â
- Bowdoin carried the momentum into the second stanza as it generated two goals in the first 2:25, helping it take a 5-4 edge. Sparked by a free-position shot by senior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) with a player advantage, the Engineers rattled off four unanswered goals to go back in front. First year
Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored and then assisted on a blast by Thomas while Rabenold capped the spurt with 6:14 on the clock. The Polar Bears trimmed the deficit to 8-6 almost two minutes later, however, sophomore
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) found the back of the net with just under two minutes remaining in the half.
Â
- MIT controlled the action in the third quarter as it outscored Bowdoin, 3-1. Gambino ended a defensive battle midway through the frame, but the Polar Bears quickly narrowed the gap to 10-7 at the 6:46 mark. The Engineers countered with a solo effort from junior
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) and a free-position shot by Pyon to create some breathing room.
Â
- Both teams produced two goals in the fourth quarter, resulting in the 14-9 final score. Arterburn converted her free-position attempt with 10:16 on the clock and then Gambino redirected a feed from Flusche almost two minutes later. The Polar Bears recorded a player-down goal halfway through the period and capped the scoring with 24 seconds remaining.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Thomas finished with three goals, one assist, and two groundballs as Rabenold tallied three goals and seven draw controls. Gambino recorded a hat trick while Arterburn posted two goals, one assist, three draw controls, and two groundballs. Flusche rounded out MIT with one goal, two assists, and two draw controls.
Â
- This was the first meeting between both programs since 1999 and the Engineers' first victory over Bowdoin. The Polar Bears won the previous outings in 1998 and 1999.
