The Lead: An 11-goal run gave MIT a lead it would not relinquish as it went on to defeat the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 20-13, in NEWMAC women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night. Senior
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) powered the Engineers with five goals and four assists while
Abby McAllister paced the Bears with one goal and four assists.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- McAllister put Coast Guard on the board first and then
Sarah Skurat increased the visitors' lead at the 10:56 mark. Senior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) cut MIT's deficit in half 49 seconds later and after some back-and-forth action, sophomore
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) evened the score at two courtesy of a free-position shot with just under seven minutes remaining. A goal from
Caitlyn Coates gave the Bears a slight edge, however, Rabenold tied things up with 1:18 on the clock.
Â
- McAllister set up
Gianna Cascio almost four minutes into the second quarter, but sophomore
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) connected on a pass from Gambino to knot the game at four. A defensive battle ensued until the Engineers rattled off six goals during the last 5:25 of the frame, helping them capture a 10-4 lead at halftime. Rabenold started the rally with a player-advantage goal and then found the back of the net 22 seconds later. After a blast by first year
Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.), fellow first year
Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) followed with back-to-back goals. Gambino, who earned an assist on Thomas's last strike, produced the final goal of the period with 46 seconds to go.
Â
- MIT carried the momentum into the third quarter as it generated four goals in the first three minutes.
Shannon Schmidt ended Coast Guard's scoring drought at the 9:30 mark while
Addy Bass narrowed the gap to 14-6 with 5:57 on the clock. The Engineers replied with a 3-1 spurt to close out the quarter.
Â
- The Bears kicked off the fourth quarter with goals by Coates and Bass, but MIT countered with goals from Pyon and Gambino, moving the score to 19-9 with 10:21 left to play. Despite the deficit Coast Guard continued to attack, generating four unanswered goals, capped by a free-position shot from Bass with 46 seconds remaining. Almost 30 seconds later, Thomas found Gambino for the final goal of the night.
