The Lead: An 11-goal run that spanned the second and third quarters helped nationally ranked No. 25 MIT pull away from Wheaton College and secure a 22-9 victory in NEWMAC women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night. Senior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied seven goals, one assist, three groundballs, three draw controls, and one caused turnover for the Engineers.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- In a closely played first quarter, MIT emerged with a 7-4 edge. A free position shot by Rabenold midway through the frame gave the Engineers a 5-3 lead, but the score remained unchanged until she redirected a pass from senior
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) at the 3:47 mark. Wheaton narrowed the gap with 2:18 remaining but first year
Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) connected on a feed from junior
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.), resulting in the slim advantage.
Â
- The Lyons trimmed their deficit to two just 21 seconds into the second stanza, kicking off an exchange of goals which moved the score to 8-6 with 7:37 on the clock. The Engineers responded with back-to-back goals by Rabenold, sparking a string of six unanswered goals to close out the quarter.
Â
- MIT controlled the action in the third quarter as it tacked on five more goals while holding Wheaton scoreless, increasing its lead to 19-6. Rabenold produced two goals and earned an assist on a blast by sophomore
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.). Sophomore
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) recorded an unassisted goal as Flusche buried a free position shot with 29 seconds remaining.
Â
- The fourth quarter was a balanced affair as both teams scored three goals, resulting in the 22-9 final.
