The Lead: No. 25 MIT scored after 29 seconds elapsed, sparking a string of 23 straight goals en route to a 23-2 victory over Wellesley College in a NEWMAC women's lacrosse game on Wednesday night. The win marked the first time in program history the Engineers have gone undefeated in conference play. Senior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) paced MIT with four goals and four assists to go along with three draw controls.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Rabenold was a factor in the Engineers' first two goals as she scored on a feed from sophomore
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and then set up junior
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) for the first of her back-to-back goals. After four minutes of scoreless play, MIT rattled off three goals in a span of 1:16, resulting in a 6-0 advantage. Senior
Grace Ann Carlson (Charleston, S.C.) started the spurt while Rabenold and first year
Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) quickly found the back of the net. Carlson later found senior
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) for the Engineers' final goal of the frame.
Â
- MIT continued to control the action in the second stanza as it generated eight goals, resulting in a 15-0 advantage at halftime. Rabenold posted two goals and two assists while Thomas produced back-to-back goals courtesy of feeds from first year
Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.).
Â
- The Engineers added four goals in both the third and fourth quarters. Wellesley ended the shutout with 4:27 left to play and then tacked on another goal with 1:22 on the clock.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Pyon tallied four goals, two assists, four draw controls, two groundballs, and two caused turnovers while Gambino finished with three goals, three assists, and three groundballs. Thomas registered five goals and one assist as Flusche totaled four assists and eight draw controls. Arterburn posted three goals and seven draw controls while junior
Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) notched three groundballs and one caused turnover.
Â
- In net, senior
Abigail Kolyer (Manhasset, N.Y.) made one save in the first half while first year
Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) closed out the game with one save.
Â
- Gambino's performance resulted in her becoming the second player in program history to reach 100 points in a season. She currently stands at 105 points with
Emily Young '18 holding the record of 113 which she set in 2018.
Â
- Pyon notched the 100
th point of her career, becoming the third player this season and the 23
rd in program history to accomplish this feat. She joins Gambino and Rabenold on this list as they both reached this milestone in the Engineers' win over Endicott College on March 8.
Â
UP NEXT:
Â
- MIT will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament. Recipients of a first-round bye, the Engineers will host a semifinal game on Wednesday, May 3 against either No. 4 U.S. Coast Guard Academy or No. 5 Smith College.
