The Lead: Nationally ranked No. 5 Tufts University rattled off four goals in a span of 2:22 during the fourth quarter, helping it pull away for a 17-11 victory over MIT in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Wednesday afternoon. Senior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) powered the Engineers with five goals and two assists.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Tufts jumped out to a 4-0 lead but junior
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) put MIT on the board courtesy of a free-position goal at the 4:16 mark. Almost two minutes later Rabenold found the back of the net, however, the Jumbos tacked on a goal with 14 seconds remaining.
Â
- The Engineers put together a 3-1 run during the first 4:34 of the second quarter to come within one (6-5). Sophomore
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) redirected a feed from Rabenold and after a Tufts' goal 30 seconds later, Rabenold scored. Flusche cut the deficit in half when she connected on a pass from first year
Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.). The Jumbos produced two quick goals, increasing their cushion to 8-5 with 8:29 on the clock. MIT replied with a player-advantage goal from Rabenold but Tufts added another goal before halftime, resulting in a 9-6 advantage.
Â
- The Jumbos opened the second-half scoring after 2:20 expired. However, the Engineers cut their deficit in half (10-8) courtesy of Rabenold's free-position goal with a player advantage and then senior
Lindsey Gambino's (Garden City, N.Y.) strike midway through the quarter. A defensive battle ensued until Tufts generated two goals during the last 1:07 of the frame.
Â
- MIT once again came within two (12-10) early in the fourth quarter. Sophomore
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) converted her free-position attempt while Gambino buried a player-advantage goal at the 11:27 mark. Exactly 1:35 later, the Jumbos started their pivotal four-goal run. A blast by Rabenold made the score 16-11 with 6:58 left to play but the hosts scored 16 seconds later, helping it secure the win.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Gambino finished with two goals, two assists, and four draw controls while junior
Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) posted four groundballs. Arterburn added three groundballs as Pyon chipped in three draw controls. Junior
Faith Bulan (New Providence, N.J.) registered two caused turnovers while senior goalie
Abigail Kolyer (Manhasset, N.Y.) totaled 13 saves and three groundballs.
