No. 5 Engineers Tied for Fifth After Day One of NCAA Outdoor National Championship

THE BASICS:

- Location: Polisseni Track and Field Complex (Pittsford, N.Y.)

- The Lead: Led by All-American performances in the discus by sophomores Alexis Boykin (Clayton, Ohio) and Emily Ball (Des Moines, Iowa), the No. 5 ranked MIT women's track and field team sits in a tie for fifth place with 10 points after day one of the 2023 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In the opening event of the championship, Boykin and Ball took second and seventh places, respectively, in the discus for a total of 10 points for the Engineers. Boykin held second for much of the competition before being passed by Skye Digman of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the fifth round of throws. Boykin was not done though as she answered on her final throw with a distance of 159 feet, 11 inches. Ball earned her first career All-American honors as she threw 148 feet, two inches in the event. Ball then competed in the javelin, finishing 19th with a throw of 113 feet, 11 inches.

- Junior Gillian Roeder (Delmar, N.Y.) advanced to the 1,500-meter final on Saturday as she surged over the final 500 meters to finish the second heat in second place and fourth overall with a time of 4:29.77. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase prelims, senior Einat Gavish (Newton, Mass.) finished in 21st place overall as she crossed in 11:09.14.

- In the final event of the day for the Engineers, the 4x400 relay team of junior Madeline Hon (Manhasset, N.Y.), first-year Shreya Kalyan (Troy, Mich.), sophomore Marina Miller (Bel Air, Md.) and junior Julia Howarth (Barrington, R.I.) advanced to Saturday's final after placing second in their heat of the prelims and third overall with a time of 3:46.50. That time marks a season-best for the Engineers by a 2.67-second margin.
