Women’s Tennis Has Solid Start to NEWITT Championship

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The MIT women's tennis team saw all five of its duos advance to the quarterfinals of their respective draws at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament on Friday at Amherst College and Smith College. Each pair won their doubles match as well as each singles match.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – "A" Draw:
  • The top-seeded tandem of first-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) and senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) defeated Kamora Helton and Pamela Gonzalez Vallardi of Nichols College, 3-0. The Engineers won their doubles match by an 8-5 margin while Lu did not drop a game in her straight-set singles victory. Zeng closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-2 singles win.
  • Juniors Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) battled Ayla Hauser and Natazya Simunyola of Smith for a 3-0 victory. In doubles, the Engineers emerged with an 8-6 win while Pados posted a 6-4, 6-3 decision in singles. Kolli secured the shutout with a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
  • First-year Fiona Lee (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) and sophomore Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) produced a 3-0 win over Sophie Wax and Ryan Wuhrman of Tufts University. They notched an 8-4 decision in doubles as Lee won her singles match, 6-2, 6-3. Samets completed the sweep after battling for a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 win in singles. 
HOW IT HAPPENED – "B" Draw:
  • First-years Anselma Petrie (Eastchester, N.Y.) and Megan Sun (Newbury Park, Calif.) defeated Ava Lyon and Olivia Gidlow of Bates College, 3-0. They won their doubles match, 8-3, while Sun cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 singles victory. Petrie secured the sweep with a 6-2, 6-4 decision.
  • Sophomores Alicen Liu (Novi, Mich.) and Nishi Gandra (Mason Ohio) notched a 3-0 win against Leja Guster and Ripley Uyeda of Endicott College. The Engineers outlasted the Gulls, 8-6, in the doubles match while Gandra registered a 6-0, 6-2 win in singles. Liu topped her singles opponent, 6-1, 6-2.
