AMHERST, Mass. – At the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) on Saturday, first-year
Fiona Lee (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) and sophomore
Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) secured a spot in the 'A' Draw Championship while first-years
Anselma Petrie (Eastchester, N.Y.) and
Megan Sun (Newbury Park, Calif.) advanced to the final in the 'B' Draw.
HOW IT HAPPENED – "A" Draw:
- In the quarterfinals, the No. 1 seed team of first-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) and senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) defeated Athena Li and Nikki Kintiroglou of Tufts University, 3-0. They won the doubles match by an 8-1 margin and then Lu posted a 6-2, 6-3 singles victory. Zeng followed with a 7-6, 6-0 decision in her singles match.
- Lee and Samets fell to Melanie Woodbury and Rachel Cranley of Tufts, 8-4, in their doubles match. However, Lee bounced back with a 6-1, 6-0 win while Samets battled for a 4-6, 6-0, 11-9 singles victory.
- Juniors Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) lost to the trio of Amy Cui, Katie Hart, and Tina She of Amherst College. The Engineers were edged out of their doubles match, 8-6, as Kolli fell to her singles opponent, 6-1, 6-3. Pados dropped a tough singles match by scores of 7-5, 6-4.
- In the semifinals, Lee and Samets battled No. 2 seeded Delila Friedman, Lili Dounchis, and Rachel Roth of Amherst for a 3-0 win. The duo notched an 8-4 doubles victory, Lee won her singles match with scores of 7-6 (8), 1-6, 11-9, and Samets recorded a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 decision.
- Lu and Zeng fell to the Amherst team of Cui, Hart, and She, 2-1. They put together an 8-7 (5) doubles win but in the singles matches Zeng lost, 7-5, 7-5, and Lu fell, 4-6, 7-6, 10-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED – "B" Draw:
- In the quarterfinals, first-years Anselma Petrie (Eastchester, N.Y.) and Megan Sun (Newbury Park, Calif.) registered a 2-1 victory against Ellie Stark and Mia Roets of Williams College. The duo won their doubles match, 8-7 (6), Sun posted a 6-3, 6-3 singles victory, and Petrie lost her singles match by the same scoreline as Sun.
- Sophomores Alicen Liu (Novi, Mich.) and Nishi Gandra (Mason Ohio) defaulted their match to Julia Zhang and Ahn Lin of Williams College.
- In the semifinals against Nadia Khera and Evelina Anastasia of Tufts, Sun and Petrie won their doubles match by an 8-4 score. Petrie fell, 7-5, 6-3, in singles action but Sun notched a 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory.
