Men's Water Polo

No. 10 Harvard Defeats Water Polo, 21-9

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In a primetime game at Blodgett Pool on Sunday evening, No. 10 Harvard defeated the MIT water polo team 21-9.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 10 Harvard 21, MIT 9
  • Records: MIT (3-11 Overall, 0-5 NWPC), No. 10 Harvard (12-2 Overall, 5-0 NWPC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior Adam Ivatorov (Rockaway, N.Y.) gave MIT the quick lead before the Crimson responded with two goals. Ivatorov tied it up before Harvard scored two more goals to take a 4-2 lead after the first quarter.
  • Sophomore Rick Lundh (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) pulled the Engineers to within two at 7:25 in the second. Ivatorov scored his third goal of the game to make the score 7-4, but from there Harvard went on a 5-1 run to end the half and enter the break with a 12-5 lead.
  • Harvard scored the first two goals of the third before an Ivatorov goal stopped the Crimson run and made it a 14-6 game. Harvard scored the next three before a score from junior Kush Khamesra (Portland, Ore.) made it a 17-7 game.
  • Sophomore Victor Perez (Key Biscayne, Fla.) and sophomore William Ewald (Greenwich, Conn.) scored for the Engineers in the final quarter, which saw MIT hold Harvard to just three goals.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ivatorov finished with four goals to increase his season total to 49. Lundh finished with two scores.
  • Khamesra and sophomore Kunal Rajadhyax (Vernon Hills, Ill.) finished with two assists each.
  • Ewald led the team with two steals.
  • First year Armaan Gil (Long Grove, Ill.) made six saves in goal.
  • The Engineers converted all of their penalty shot chances.
UP NEXT:
  • The Engineers will head to Baltimore to compete in the DIII Eastern Championship from Saturday, October 19 – Sunday, October 20. MIT will open play against hosts Johns Hopkins on Saturday at 11 AM followed by a 1:30 PM match against Washington & Jefferson.
