for the week ending 11/10/24

Sport Shorts Spotlight: NEWMAC Women's Soccer Champions!


The No. 3 ranked MIT women's soccer team swept through the NEWMAC Tournament to claim the program's eighth NEWMAC Championship and ninth conference championship overall. The top seed in the tournament, MIT advanced to the NEWMAC Championship Semifinals with a 2-1 win over eight-seed Coast Guard on Tuesday. MIT then broke a scoreless tie early in the second half to earn a berth in the NEWMAC Championship game as the top-seeded Engineers defeated fourth-seed Babson, 1-0, on Thursday night. The Engineers then defeated seventh-seed WPI 3-0 in the final to win the title.

MIT will host NCAA regional games later this week, details are below.

Championship Update

 

Men's Cross Country

  • MIT will compete in the NCAA Division III East Regional Championship on Saturday at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds in Hopkinton, N.H. at 12:00 PM. 
  • Additional information will be posted on the schedule when it becomes available. 

Women's Cross Country

  • MIT will compete in the NCAA Division III East Regional Championship on Saturday at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds in Hopkinton, N.H. at 11:00 AM. 
  • Additional information will be posted on the schedule when it becomes available. 

Women’s Soccer

  • Women’s soccer will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. MIT will play SUNY Geneseo on Saturday at 11:00 AM. 
  • Additional information will be posted on the team’s schedule page when it becomes available. 

Women's Volleyball

  • MIT is the No. 1 seed for the NEWMAC Championship and will host a quarterfinal match on Tuesday at 7:00 PM against Emerson. 
  • Check the schedule for updated information as the week progresses. 
  • Note: The highest remaining seed will host the semifinals on Saturday and the championship match on Sunday at 1:00 PM.

Men's Basketball

  • Sophomore Isaac Dobie scored 22 points and added six steals while Parker Spann recorded a double-double, with 17 points and 11 rebounds, to lead the MIT men's basketball team to an 87-77 non-conference victory over UMass Dartmouth in the team's season opener on Saturday.

Women's Basketball

  • In the opening game of the Scholar's Classic at No. 1 NYU, the MIT women's basketball team fell to the host Violets, 80-39 on Friday night. First-year Libi Matityahoo led all players with 15 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Engineers.
  • Three players reached double digits in scoring as the MIT women's basketball team defeated Swarthmore College, 56-48 on Saturday.

Field Hockey

  • Despite a goal by No. 3 seeded WPI early in the fourth quarter, No. 2 seeded and nationally ranked No. 17 MIT held on for a 2-1 victory in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Field Hockey Championship on Thursday night
  • MIT fell to top-seeded No. 7 Babson College, 3-0, in the NEWMAC Field Hockey Championship on Saturday, This was the Engineers' eighth straight appearance in the title game.

Football

  • Junior linebacker Chase Williams recorded a first half pick-six, as the MIT football team snapped a five-game losing streak with a resounding 27-0 NEWMAC victory over Norwich University on a sunny fall afternoon in Northfield, Vt.

Men's Soccer

  • 110 minutes were not enough to decide a winner in the NEWMAC Men's Soccer Championship First Round as the fourth-seeded MIT men's soccer team and fifth-seeded Springfield needed penalty kicks to decide who would advance to Thursday's semifinals. It was the Pride who came away with a 9-8 edge in PKs to advance.

Women's Volleyball

  • In NEWMAC women's volleyball action on Tuesday night, No. 4 MIT defeated Babson College, 25-23, 25-9, 25-20. Senior Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) tallied 14 digs, seven kills, and five aces for the Engineers.
  • The team wrapped up the regular season by defeating Smith College (25-17, 25-12, 25-22) and Union College (25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers claimed their second NEWMAC regular season title in three years and earned the No. 1 seed for the upcoming NEWMAC Championship.

Squash

  • The No. 16 MIT squash team earned its second straight sweep as the Engineers took down Northeastern, 9-0, on Tuesday night.
  • The The Engineers then opened play in the Navy Round Robin Tournament against No. 20 Navy on Friday night. The Engineers dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to the Midshipmen. No. 13 Franklin and Marshall defeated MIT on Saturday afternoon, 8-1. The squash team wrapped up the Navy Round Robin with a decisive 9-0 win over No. 32 Fordham on Sunday afternoon.

Water Polo

  • The MIT water polo team outscored LIU 11-5 in the second and third quarters to take an 18-10 win over the Sharks on Saturday night in the Zesiger Center Pool. The Engineers dropped a 21-14 match earlier in the day to No. 6 Princeton.
  • MIT then fell to Iona, 15-10, on Sunday. MIT sophomore Kieran Kearns finished with six assists in the match to set the single-season assist record as he now has 57 this season.
