Engineers Sweep 2026 NEWMAC Championships with Record-Breaking Performances
Both the MIT men's and women's track and field teams secured dominant victories at the 2026 NEWMAC Championships. The No. 11 ranked women’s team captured its fifth consecutive and 17th overall conference title, finishing with 276 points and a staggering 154.5-point margin over second place. Their weekend was highlighted by record-breaking runs, including Ava Hartman’s new meet standard in the 10,000m and a facility record from the 4x400m relay squad. The No. 9 ranked men’s team claimed their 24th program championship, totaling 253 points after a perfect sweep of all five events on the opening day. The men also rewrote the record books, with Luke Rupert and Owen Sondag setting new meet marks in the steeplechase and 10,000m, respectively. Success extended beyond the track as Patrick Haertel earned the Laurels of Academic Excellence for holding the highest GPA in the competition. Collectively, the teams combined for dozens of All-Conference honors, proving that MIT’s depth is as impressive as its top-tier talent. With the conference hardware secured, both squads now shift their focus to the New England Division III Championships at Springfield College next weekend.
