Water Polo Drops 16-13 Match to Iona at NWPC Tournament

PRINCETON, NJ – Iona used a five-goal second quarter to help secure a 16-13 win over the MIT water polo team at the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Tournament hosted by Princeton at Denunzio Pool.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: Iona 16, MIT 13
  • Records: MIT (7-15 Overall), Iona (12-13, 6-6)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Rick Lundh (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) opened the scoring for MIT at 7:03. The teams exchanged goals with junior Adam Ivatorov (Rockaway, N.Y.) and first year Derek Schaffer (Redondo Beach, Calif.) scoring for the Engineers as the teams ended the first frame tied at three.
  • Iona outscored MIT 5-1 to pull ahead 8-4 in the second frame.  First year Armaan Gill (Long Grove, Ill.) made three straight saves with time winding down in the second quarter to keep it an 8-4 contest.
  • After a goal from the Gales made it a 9-4 match, Schaffer kick started a 7-4 MIT run that pulled the Engineers to 13-10. Sophomore Kunal Rajadhyax (Vernon Hills, Ill.) scored with 30 seconds left in the quarter to get MIT to within two of the Gales.
  • Iona scored to open the fourth, but back-to-back goals from sophomore Kieran Kearns (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) and Ivatorov cut the Iona lead to one, but the Gales added two insurance scores for the win.
