No. 19 Brown Holds Off MIT Water Polo, 20-17

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The MIT water polo team fell just short of earning the program's first win over Brown since 2014 as the Engineers could not hold off a late comeback by No. 19 Brown as the Bears scrapped by with a 20-17 win at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Sunday afternoon. 
 
THE BASICS:
  • Scores: No. 19 Brown 20, MIT 17
  • Records: MIT (6-13 Overall, 0-7 NWPC), No. 19 Brown (14-7, 4-2 NWPC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first eight minutes of play saw the teams combine for 12 goals to end the first quarter tied at six. Sophomore Rick Lundh (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) notched a first quarter hat trick and junior Adam Ivatorov (Rockaway, N.Y.) scored twice. Lundh's third goal with eight seconds left tied the match at six.
  • Down 9-6, a goal from sophomore Jackson Kay (Palo Alto, Calif.) sparked a 7-2 run to give the Engineers a 13-11 as a goal from sophomore William Ewald (Greenwich, Conn.) gave MIT a two-goal lead at 4:32 in the third.
  • After Brown cut the lead to one at 2:01, Ewald tallied his second goal of the game at the 1:04 mark to put MIT back up two at 15-13.
  • The Bears scored three straight to regain a one-goal lead, but Lundh scored at 6:08 in the fourth to tie the game at 16. Brown used a three-goal run to pull ahead 19-16. Ivatorov made it a two-goal game with 2:12 remaining, but Brown held off a late charge to earn the comeback victory.  
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ivatorov tied his career-best with seven goals in the contest to bring his season total to 69. He is the sixth player in program history to score seven goals in a match and is the second player to have multiple seven-goal games. He also earned five exclusions in the game.
  • Lundh tied a career-high with six scores on the day.
  • Kay and Ewald led the Engineers with three assists in the game.
  • First year Joshua Woren (Aurora, Colo.) made four saves in the game and grabbed two steals.
UP NEXT:
  • MIT returns to the Zesiger Center on Saturday, November 9 when the Engineers welcome No. 6 Princeton for an 11:30 AM match followed by a 7:30 PM match against LIU. The Bears will host Iona on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
