Women's Swimming and Diving Increases Lead after Day Three of NEWMAC Championships

THE BASICS:
 
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Zesiger Center Pool)
 
- Standings: 1st of 10 (1028.5 points)
 
- The Lead: The MIT women's swimming and diving team increased its lead as the Engineers won five more events on day three of the 2024 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championship.
 
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:

400 IM

  • MIT swept the top four spots, led by junior Kate Augustyn (Eau Claire, Wis.) who captured her third straight victory in the event with a time of 4:22.84.
  • First year Katherine Yao (Frisco, Texas) finished second (4:26.82) followed by sophomore Natalie Tang (Allen, Texas) (4:27.09), and first year Christina Beggs (Voorhees, N.J.) (4:30.20). All three dropped at least seven seconds off their prelim swims.
  • Augustyn, Yao, and Tang posted times better than last year's invited mark.
  • Junior Jolie Kim (Englewood, Colo.) won the B Final and dropped an impressive 10 seconds off her morning swim as she finished in 4:37.61.
 
100-Butterfly
  • Sophomore Lauren Levy (Amherst, N.Y.) defended her title with a final time of 56.02.
  • Senior Helen Sun (Solon, Ohio) finished in third with a time of 57.01 followed by first year Kailey Simons (Williston Park, N.Y.) in fourth (57.04).
  • Sophomore Kathy Zhao (Cincinnati, Ohio) took seventh with a time of 57.74.
  • Levy recorded a B Cut with her swim.
  • Sun recorded a collegiate-best time.
 
200-Free
  • First year Ella Roberson (Midland, Mich.) took the crown with her meet record time of 1:49.09. Classmate Sydney Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) finished behind her with a mark of 1:51.37.
  • Roberson and Smith both swam faster than the 2023 invited time. Roberson's time is now the third fastest in DIII.
 
100-Breast
  • Graduate student Edenna Chen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished in second with a time of 1:03.16.
 
100-Back
  • Sophomore Annika Naveen (Wynnewood, Pa.) repeated as champ with her time of 55.57. Junior Iris Yang (Seattle, Wash.) took second as she clocked in at 56.79.
 
200-Medley Relay
  • The Engineers wrapped up day three with a 1:41.16 first-place time. Augustyn kicked off the relay with a time of 25.39 followed by Chen (28.75) and Naveen (24.30). Roberson secured the win with her freestyle time of 22.72.

 
UP NEXT:

- Championship Sunday begins tomorrow with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. The event will conclude with the 1,650 free, 200-back, 100-free, 200-fly, 3-meter dive and concludes with the 400-free relay.
