Rifle Captures Program’s First MAC Championship

THE BASICS:
 
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (DuPont Rifle Range)
 
- The Lead: The MIT rifle team closed out the season by winning the program's first Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference Championship this past weekend. The Engineers finished with an aggregate score of 4.431, followed by John Jay (4,319), Norwich (4,312), SUNY Plattsburgh (3,995), University of Rhode Island (2,222), and Schreiner (2,205). MIT previously won the air rifle title in 2013 and 2014 and captured the smallbore crown in 2016.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- In smallbore on Saturday, the Engineers won the event with a total of 2,186 points. Norwich was second (2,121), followed by John Jay (2,092), and Plattsburgh.
 
- First-year Phoebe Xu (Fairbanks, Alaska) claimed third place with 555 points, just ahead of first-year Angela Kim (Puyallup, Wash.) who tallied 545 points. Junior Rose Alsalman (Jericho, Palestine) and sophomore Danny Antonelli (Houston, Texas) both had a score of 543, ranking seventh and eighth, respectively. Xu, Kim, Alsalman, and Campbell each recorded season-high scores.
 
- On Sunday, MIT took the air rifle competition as it amassed 2,245 points, narrowly ahead of John Jay (2,227) and URI (2,222). Schreiner finished fourth (2,205) with Norwich (2,191) and Plattsburgh (2,073) rounding out the standings.
 
- Alsalman led the way for the Engineers as she placed fourth with a score of 565. Xu ranked sixth (563), Antonelli was eighth (560), Kim finished ninth (557), and junior Farin Liani (Cambridge, Mass.) rounded out the squad in 11th place with a season-high 554 points.
 
- In the individual aggregate standings, Xu was third with 1,118 points while Alsalman was right behind with a total of 1,108. Antonelli ranked sixth (1,1103), just one point ahead of Kim in seventh place.
