The Lead: Seven first-half goals created enough of a cushion as No. 19 MIT went on to defeat No. 15 Amherst College, 11-5, in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Wednesday night. Senior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) powered the Engineers with four goals and one assist while
Mia Raven tallied two goals, one assist, three caused turnovers, and two draw controls for the Mammoths.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- A pair of goals by Rabenold and a solo effort by sophomore
Nina Petulla (Natick, Mass.) gave MIT a small lead midway through the opening quarter. Amherst ended the shutout courtesy of a free-position goal by
Sofia Guttmann with 3:04 left in the frame.
Â
- The Engineers generated four unanswered goals in the second stanza, resulting in a 7-1 advantage at halftime. Senior
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) produced the first and last goals while Petulla scored twice, the second on an assist by sophomore
Monica Petulla (Natick, Mass.).
Â
- Rabenold continued the scoring run as she recorded a free-position shot 2:21 into the third quarter. Amherst replied with three goals in a span of 2:13, narrowing the gap to 8-4 with 9:44 on the clock. Raven buried a player-advantage free-position shot and then found the back of the net 17 seconds later. She followed this with an assist on a goal by
Emma Crotty. The remainder of the period was a defensive battle until Rabenold set up junior
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) for a player-advantage goal with 1:06 remaining.
Â
- An unassisted goal by Rabenold exactly 3:29 into the fourth quarter moved the score to 10-4. Midway through the frame,
Kate Becker registered what proved to be the Mammoths' final goal of the night.
Nina Petulla secured the win on an unassisted goal with 3:25 left to play.
