DMR, Engebretson Highlight Day One of NCAA Track and Field Championship

THE BASICS:
 
- Meet: 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championship
 
- Location: Virginia Beach, Va. (Virginia Beach Sports Complex)
 
- Results: T-12th (Seven Points)
 
- The Lead: A fifth-place finish in the distance medley relay and a sixth-place performance by junior Sam Engebretson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) helped the MIT men's track and field team tie for 12th place following the first day of competition at the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship on Friday.
 
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:
 
- Comprised of junior Ziyad Hassan (Ashburn, Va.), junior Ian Koe (San Mateo, Calif.), sophomore Charlie Glass (Austin, Texas), and graduate student Sam Acquaviva (Newburyport, Mass.), the distance medley relay placed fifth with a time of 9:51.89.
 
- Engebretson, a first-time qualifier in the weight throw, finished sixth with a distance of 19.63m (64' 5"). His performance resulted in his first indoor All-America honor and a new PR.
 
- In his debut at the NCAA Championship, sophomore Patrick Haertel (Cumming, Ga.) posted a time of 6.80 to finish sixth in the prelims of the 60m. His performance was a PR and earned him a spot in the finals.
 
- A first-time qualifier, graduate student Lowell Hensgen (Raleigh, N.C.) finished 15th in the 5,000m final with a time of 14:27.54.
 
- In the prelims of the 60m hurdles, graduate student Kenneth Wei (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) ranked ninth with a time of 8.11.
 
- Representing the Engineers in the mile prelims, senior Henry Hardart (Annapolis, Md.) was 11th (4:10.71) while junior Pablo Arroyo (Richardson, Texas) ranked 14th (4:13.94).
 
- Junior Simon Opsahl (Redlands, Calif.) finished 17th in the prelims of the 800m with a time of 1:54.00.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- MIT is back in action on Saturday, Mach 9 at 11:00 a.m. as the Engineers will compete in the shot put, high jump, 60m, and 3,000m during the final day of the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championship.
