Ball Leads Women’s Track and Field on Day One of NEWMAC Championship

THE BASICS:
 
- Meet: NEWMAC Championship
 
- Location: Springfield, Mass. (Blake Track)
 
- The Lead: Highlighted by a pair of victories from junior Emily Ball (Des Moines, Iowa), the MIT women's track and field sits in first place with 82 points after the opening day of the NEWMAC Championship on Friday. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy ranks second (33) followed by WPI (23), Wheaton College (18), host Springfield College (15), Wellesley College (13), Babson College (six), and Mount Holyoke College (five).
 
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS – TOP TWO FINISHERS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS:
 
- In the javelin, Ball won on her final attempt which landed at 40.95m (134' 4"). She moved ahead of sophomore Elaine Wang (West Des Moines, Iowa) whose fifth throw reached 40.03m (131' 4") and resulted in a runner-up finish.
 
- Ball's second victory came in the hammer throw with a distance of 49.16m (161' 3"). Sophomore Lilia Ould-Hammou (Metuchen, N.J.) claimed fourth place (44.37m / 145' 7") while first-year Macy Brennan (Westlake, Ohio) finished seventh (43.74m / 143' 6").
 
- Sophomore Katelyn Howard (Lake Oswego, Ore.) won the pole vault with a height of 3.80m (12' 5.5") as sophomore Hailey Surace (Snohomish, Wash.) was the runner up at the same height. Sophomore Tessa Baker (Reno, Nev.) captured fourth place at 3.25m (10' 8").
 
- In the 10,000m, senior Archana Mohandas (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) finished second with a time of 38:01.36, edging out sophomore Katherine Sanderson (West Hartford, Conn.) by .09 seconds, who claimed third place.
 
- Senior Emma Martin (North Andover, Mass.) placed second in the long jump (5.10m / 16' 8.75") while sophomore Nony Otu Ugwu (Katy, Texas) finished sixth with a distance of 5.00m (16' 5").
 
- Junior Marina Miller (Bel Air, Md.) logged the top time in the 100m prelims (12.22), guaranteeing a spot in the final.
 
- Sophomore Katie Kempff (St. Charles, Ill.) finished seventh in the 100m hurdles prelims with a time of 16.11, which was good enough to advance to the final.
