Women’s Track and Field Leads After Opening Day of NCAA Championship

THE BASICS:
 
- Meet: 2024 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championship
 
- Location: Myrtle Beach, S.C. (Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium)
 
- Results: 1st of 37 (16 Points)
 
- The Lead: Top-seven finishes by junior Alexis Boykin (Clayton, Ohio), sophomore Hailey Surace (Snohomish, Wash.), and junior Emily Ball (Des Moines, Iowa) helped put the MIT women's track and field team atop the standings during the first day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
 
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:
 
- Boykin was the runner up in the discus for the second year in a row as she had a toss of 50.26m (164-11), which was just 0.01m behind the winner. Ball also repeated with a seventh-place finish as she recorded a distance of 45.55 (149' 5").
 
- In her first appearance at the outdoor championship, Surace captured third place in the pole vault with a height of 3.91m (12' 10"). Also a first-time outdoor qualifier, sophomore Katelyn Howard (Lake Oswego, Ore.) tied for 21st place as she cleared 3.56m (11' 8").
 
- Sophomore Katherine Sanderson (West Hartford, Conn.) logged a time of 36:44.10 to finish in 13th place in the 10,000m final, resulting in All-America Second Team honors.
 
- In the javelin, Ball finished 18th with a distance of 37.86m (124' 2") while sophomore Elaine Wang (West Des Moines, Iowa) was 20th as she produced a mark of 37.54m (123' 2") in her NCAA debut.
 
- Senior Paige Cooksey (Ormond Beach, Fla.) logged a time of 1:00.83 in the prelims of the 400m hurdles, ranking seventh overall and earning a spot in the finals on Saturday.
 
- The 4x400 relay, comprised of junior Marina Miller (Bel Air, Md.), senior Julia Howarth (Barrington, R.I.), junior Olivia Dias (East Taunton, Mass.), and Cooksey, finished second in its heat with a time of 3:44.81 to automatically qualify for Saturday's final.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- MIT is back in action Friday, May 24 at 4:00 p.m. as the Engineers will compete in the shot put, the 400m prelim, and the 800m prelim during the second day of the 2024 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championship.
