The Lead: Despite sending the second set of her match to a tiebreaker, it would not be enough as No. 7 seeded
Matia Cristiani (Babson College) outlasted first-year
Katya Shepherd Johnson (Takoma Park, Md.) for a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles Championship on Sunday.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Cristiani won the first two games, but Shepherd Johnson rattled off four straight points to get on the board. Cristiani gradually pulled away, taking the first set, 6-2.
Â
- Shepherd Johnson broke Cristiani's serve to open the second set, however, she broke back and then went ahead, 2-1. Shepherd Johnson captured the next game, but Cristiani went on to build a 4-2 lead. Shepherd Johnson replied by tying the frame at 4-4 and then both players held serve, sending the set into a tiebreaker.
Â
- Shepherd Johnson inched out to a 3-1 lead, however, Cristiani went on a 5-1 run to go ahead for good. Shepherd Johnson narrowed the gap to 6-5, but Cristiani thwarted the comeback attempt by winning the next point.
