Cambridge, Mass. (July 22) – Austin Ringheim, Head Men's Water Polo Coach/Instructor, has stepped down from his position after five years at MIT. A national search for his replacement is underway.

"During his time in DAPER, Austin re-established a strong culture within the men's water polo program and his teams regularly advanced in postseason play," said Dr. G. Anthony Grant, MIT Director of Athletics/DAPER Department Head. "I wish Austin well in his new endeavors and thank him for his service to MIT." 

A two-time DIII Eastern Coach of the Year, Ringheim guided the Engineers to third place at the USA Water Polo Division III National Championships in 2019, 2022 and 2023. Over his five seasons as head coach at MIT, the Engineers were the only program to compete in every National Championship event since its inception in 2019. 

Under Ringheim's leadership, the Engineers were awarded 11 All-American honors, including last season when the Engineers tied a program record with four All-American selections.

Ringheim led the Engineers to their most wins since the 2014 season (14) in 2023, as the team set a program record for goals scored (379). The Engineers have also garnered six Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) All-Conference honors in the past five years.

Ringheim's teams consistently excelled outside of pool with his 2019 team posting the highest GPA in the country. MIT has ranked in the top-five in the country in GPA each year and have collected 38 ACWPC Academic Awards. Senior Colin Weaver (Huntington Beach, Calif.) was recently named a College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic At-Large Third Team All-American.

Ringheim originally joined MIT from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, where he was the assistant head coach for the men's and women's water polo programs. Ringheim graduated from Whittier College in May 2016, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in kinesiology and nutrition sciences.
