CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT women's tennis team kicked off the 2024-25 season on Friday by hosting the three-day MIT Invitational. The Engineers, who were ranked No. 13 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll last year, welcomed No. 9 Amherst College, No. 20 Tufts University, and No. 25 Bowdoin College to the DuPont Tennis Courts.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Singles:
- In the prelims, first-year Anselma Petrie (Eastchester, N.Y.) fell to Kat Vieberg of Amherst, 8-2.
- Sophomore Nishi Gandra (Mason, Ohio) was defeated by Marie Frati of Bowdoin, 8-4.
- Sophomore Alicen Liu (Novi, Mich.) lost to Evelina Anastasi of Tufts, 8-7 (10-1).
- Sophomore Sophia Min (Naples, Fla.) fell to Phoebe Thorne of Bowdoin, 8-7 (10-1).
- In the round of 32, junior Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) defeated Lilly Dounchis of Amherst, 7-5, 6-0.
- First-year Megan Sun (Newbury Park, Calif.) battled Suzanne Pogorelec of Bowdoin for a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 victory.
- First-year Fiona Lee (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) defeated Nikki Kintiroglou of Tufts, 6-5, 6-0.
- Junior Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) recorded a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Zoe Sun of Bowdoin.
- First-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) defeated Isabella Hartung of Bowdoin, 6-4, 6-1.
- Senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) outlasted Mia Kintiroglou of Amherst, 6-0, 3-6, 10-6.
- Sophomore Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) fell to Ellie Gershaw of Tufts, 6-2, 6-2.
- In the consolation round of 32, Petrie lost to Ross of Bowdoin, 6-2, 6-1.
- Gandra fell to Pogorelec, 6-2, 6-2.
- Samets was defeated by Katie Hart of Amherst, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.
- Min lost to Brooklyn Bindas of Tufts, 6-2, 6-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Doubles:
- In the prelims, Min and Petrie lost to Candice Ballarin and Julia Ross of Bowdoin, 8-0.
- Sun and Liu fell to Gershaw and Nikki Kintiroglou of Tufts, 8-4.
- In the round of 16, Samets and Lee defeated Karolina Dobiecka and Tina She of Amherst, 8-4.
- Kolli and Pados topped Greta Stechschulte and Mia Kintiroglou of Amherst, 8-5.
- Lu and Zeng battled Caroline Stuhlfaut and Pogorelec of Bowdoin for an 8-7 (3) victory.
- In the consolation round of 16, Min and Petrie advanced due the withdrawal of Rachel Cranley and Bindas of Tufts.
- Sun and Liu fell to Sun and Frati of Bowdoin, 8-5.
