Lee Leads Women's Tennis at MIT Invitational; Advances to Semifinals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.  – First-year Fiona Lee (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) advanced to the semifinals in the Singles Draw as the MIT women's tennis team continued play against Amherst College, Tufts University, and Bowdoin College at the MIT Invitational on Saturday at the DuPont Tennis Courts.

Lee earned a pair of victories on Saturday and will matchup with Amherst junior Deliala Charles Friedman, the tournament's top seed, in tomorrow's semifinals round. The winner will advance to face either junior Stephanie Woodbury of Tufts or sophomore Caroline Stuhlfaut from Bowdoin College. 

HOW IT HAPPENED - Singles:

  • In the round of 16, MIT junior Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) fell to Friedman, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6
  • Lee defeated classmate Megan Sun (Newbury Park, Calif.), 6-2, 7-6 (1), before earning a 6-2, 7-5, win over Natalie Hu of Tufts in the quarterfinals.
  • Junior Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) dropped a 6-2, 6-3 final to Woodbury in the Round of 16.
  • First-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) defeated Tina She of Amherst, 6-4, 6-2 in the Round of 16 to set-up a quarterfinal matchup with Woodbury. Woodbury advanced to the semifinals, defeating Zeng in a tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 10-4.
  • Senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) defeated Nadia Khera of Tufts, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals but fell to Stuhlfaut in the next round, 7-5, 7-6 (4). 

HOW IT HAPPENED - Doubles:

  • In the quarterfinals, Kolli and Pados saw their run through the doubles bracket end with an 8-5 setback to Jamilah Sarah and Isabella Hartung of Bowdoin.
  • Lu and Zeng were also knocked out in the quarterfinals, falling to Amy Cui and Katie Hart of Amherst, 8-5.
  • Sophomore Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) and Lee fell to Melanie Woodbury and Stephanie Woodbury, 8-7 (5), in their quarterfinal match up.
  • In the consolation quarters, sophomore Sophia Min (Naples, Fla.) and first-year Anselma Petrie (Eastchester, N.Y.) dropped an 8-3 decision to Athena Li and Natalie Hu of Tufts.

UP NEXT:

  • Action at the MIT Invitational concludes on Sunday with championship matches in each draw. Lee will compete in the singles semifinals at 9am, with the finals to follow.
