BRUNSWICK, Maine – Trailing 0-6, 0-4, first-year
Fiona Lee (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) came back to defeat Sarai Dorismond of Babson College, 0-6, 6-4, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional Championship. This will be the fifth time since 2019 that MIT will be represented in the semifinals.
Lee, the No. 3 seed, earned a pair of victories on Saturday and will match up with Babson senior and No. 2 seed Olivia Soffer in Sunday's semifinal. The winner will advance to face either sophomore Jackie Soloveychick of Wesleyan University or Middlebury College senior and No. 5 seed Sahana Raman.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Singles:
- In the A Singles round of 16, Lee defeated Lane Durkin of Wesleyan, 6-3, 7-6 (4) before mounting her 0-6, 6-4, 6-0 come-from-behind victory against Dorismond in the quarterfinals.
- In the B Singles round of 16, sophomore Sophia Min (Naples, Fla.) fell to Macie Carlos of Wesleyan, 6-1, 6-1.
- In the consolation matches, first-year Anselma Petrie (Eastchester, N.Y.) fell to Jane Ladaga of Williams College, 8-6.
- Senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) defeated Julia Zhang of Williams, 8-5.
- First-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) topped Amy Cui of Amherst College, 8-5.
- First-year Megan Sun (Newbury Park, Calif.) defeated Ananya Annapantula of Middlebury, 8-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Doubles:
- In the round of 16, Lu and Zeng battled No. 2 seed Deliala Friedman and Lily Dounchis of Amherst for an 8-7 (7-5) victory. Lu and Zeng then fell to Jackie Soloveychik and Natalia Leroy of Wesleyan, 8-2, in the quarterfinals.
- In the consolation matches, Lee and Sun defeated Zoe Sun and Suzanne Pogorelec of Bowdoin College, 8-4.
- Lee and Sun followed this up by defeating Gusty Beveridge and Ananya Annapantula of Middlebury, 8-5.
- Min and Petrie lost to Chahana Budhbhatti and Cecilia Denis of Brandeis, 8-5.
