Sport Shorts Spotlight: Women's Track and Field


The quartet of junior Shreya Kalyan, senior Marina Miller, senior Olivia Dias, and junior Krystal Montgomery set an NCAA indoor record and a program record in the sprint medley relay as the MIT women's track and field team returned to action on Saturday at the Suffolk Ice Breaker. The winning time of 4:11.44 eclipsed the previous NCAA mark of 4:12.59 that was set by Monmouth (Ill.) in 2017. Kalyan and Miller raced in the 200-meter legs, followed by Dias in the 400 meters, and Montgomery in the 800-meter anchor leg. The Engineers return to action on Saturday, January 18 at the URI Invitational.

Men's Basketball

  • The Engineers led by a single point at the break, but an early second half run boosted Salve Regina in a 75-67 NEWMAC victory on Wednesday evening. MIT sophomore Merlin Gogolin lead the team with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
  • Babson College took full advantage of a late first half run and strong shooting to score a 103-68 NEWMAC win over MIT men's basketball on Saturday.

Women's Basketball

  • Layups by senior Kamsi Nwogu brought MIT within four points with 1:16 and 39 seconds left to play, however, Middlebury College went 3-of-4 at the free throw line during the final 21 seconds to hold on for a 62-56 win on Tuesday night.

Men's Swimming and Diving

  • The No. 7 MIT men's swimming and diving team fell just short of a victory over Division I Boston University as the Terriers were able to sneak by the Engineers, 141-139, on Friday night. MIT opened the meet by taking the top two spots in the 400 Medley Relay. Sophomore Aitor Arrese-Igor, first year Grant Hu, senior Jalen Evans, and junior Eugene Jiang took the top spot in 3:19.24. Junior Zack West, junior Thomas Wu, first year Ben Wu, and Aaron Martin finished second in 3:20.91. 
  • On Saturday afternoon, the No. 7 MIT men's swimming and diving team earned a 191-103 victory over the United States Coast Guard Academy. Sophomore Jack Tucker swept both boards on the day, and and the men took 12 first place finishes out of 16 events. 

Women's Swimming and Diving 

  • The No. 4 MIT women's swimming and diving team grabbed the program's first win over Division I Boston University on Friday night, defeating the Terriers, 188.5-92.5. This is the second win over a DI opponent for the Engineers.
  • First-year Sarah Bernard won the 500 freestyle, with a new school record time of 4:53.11, defeating Katie Pestrichelli by almost 10 seconds.
  • On Saturday, the women's swimming and diving team won every event en route to a decisive 243-53 victory over the United States Coast Guard Academy.
  • Senior Kate Augustyn captured an NCAA B Cut in the 100 Back. Sophomore Fiora Bertahani hit NCAA Regional marks on both boards while senior Rachel Loh hit an NCAA Regional score on the 1-Meter.

Men's Track and Field

  • The MIT men's track and field team returned to action on Saturday with several strong performances at the Suffolk Ice Breaker.
  • MIT's sprint medley relay team, comprised of senior Ian Koe, sophomore Davis Lee, sophomore Connor Sterling, and first-year Wyatt Vick, now sits as the ninth-best all-time performance in NCAA indoor history as they finished third in the meet with a time of 3:38.11.

Women's Track and Field

  • At the Suffolk Ice Breaker last Saturday, junior Krystal Montgomery (1:16.44) and senior Olivia Dias (1:16.76) took second and third place in the 500m, with their performances ranking third and fourth, respectively, all-time at MIT.
  • In the pole vault, junior Hailey Surace (Snohomish, Wash.) matched her personal indoor best and finished tied for second place at 3.90m (12' 9 1/2") as her height is a national qualifying mark.
