BEVERLEY, Mass. — Sophomore Cade Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) and junior AJ Hamm (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each drove in a pair of runs as No. 4 Endicott College rallied from a 3-0 first inning deficit to defeat the MIT baseball team, 9-5, in non-conference play on Thursday afternoon at North Field.
THE BASICS:
- Score: Endicott 9, MIT 5
- Records: MIT (9-12 Overall), Endicott (19-3 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT got off to a fast start, courtesy of NCBWA National Hitter and Rookie of the Week, John Spivey (St. Louis, Mo.), as Spivey tripled to right center to score Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) and Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) after Schoenfeld singled and Godfrey walked to start the game. MIT jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Spivey.Â
- The Gulls weren't behind for long, as the hosts responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score, 3-3. Endicott loaded the bases on the strength of back-to-back singles from Zach Stephenson (Mansfield, Mass.) and Danny MacDougall (Taunton, Mass.) and a walk to Joey Frammartino (North Reading, Mass.). Stephenson scored the first Endicott run on a Cade Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) sacrifice fly. John Mulready (Peabody, Mass.) added an RBI single to score MacDougall and Frammartino scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
- The game moved to the third inning tied at 3-3 before Endicott scored five runs on four hits and an MIT error to take a five-run lead. Bernardo drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single to left before the Gulls scored a pair of runs on an error to move ahead 6-3. A sac fly RBI from TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine) and a wild pitch with the bases loaded made the score 8-3.
- Endicott moved ahead in the sixth, as Hamm singled to right with a pair of runners on the bases to make the score 9-3.Â
- MIT got two runs back in the top of the seventh. Hanvin Lee (Porter Ranch, Calif.) and Eitan Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) hit back-to-back singles to open the inning before Schoenfeld ripped an RBI double to right field with two outs to score both runners and make the score 9-5.Â
