Sport Shorts Spotlight: Women's Track and Field


No. 3 MIT captured the program’s fourth straight and 16th overall NEWMAC Championship on Saturday. The Engineers won 12 events and produced 21 All-Conference performances, helping them amass 278 points at the conclusion of the two-day meet.

Championship Update:
 

Men's Heavyweight Crew

  • MIT will compete in the New England Rowing Championship on Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester.

Women's Openweight Crew

  • MIT will compete in the New England Rowing Championship on Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester.

Men's Lacrosse

  • MIT is the No. 3 seed in the NEWMAC Championship and will travel to No. 2 Babson for a semifinal game on Thursday at 7:00 PM.
  • The title game will be hosted by the highest remaining seed on Saturday.

Women's Lacrosse

  • MIT is the No. 2 seed in the NEWMAC Championship and will host No. 3 Springfield in the semifinals on Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
  • The championship game will be hosted by the highest remaining seed on Saturday.

Sailing

  • On Monday, MIT is currently in eighth place heading to the second and final day of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Women’s Team Race National Championship.

Men's Tennis

  • MIT advanced to the NEWMAC Championship and will travel to top-seeded Babson for the title match today (Monday) at 3:00 PM.

Women's Tennis

  • MIT is the No. 1 seed for the NEWMAC Championship and will host a semifinal match on Saturday at 12:00 PM.
  • The title match will be held at MIT on Sunday at 12:00 PM.

  • MIT will compete at the New England Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at Coast Guard.

Baseball

  • First year John Spivey was 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs and senior Malachi Soqui and junior Louis Hernandez each hit home runs to put the game out of reach, as the MIT baseball team defeated Emerson College, 7-3, in NEWMAC action on Tuesday afternoon.
  • A two-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 6-6 tie and sent Rhode Island College to an 8-6 victory over MIT on Thursday.
  • Senior Malachi Soqui hit a pair of home runs and starting pitcher Mason Estrada struck out 12 batters over six innings in game one as the MIT baseball team split a NEWMAC doubleheader with Wheaton College on Sunday afternoon at Sidell Stadium. MIT won game one, 6-1, with Wheaton earning a 5-3 win in game two.
     

Men's Heavyweight Crew

  • The MIT men's heavyweight crew team wrapped up their regular season with a home win over Bates in the varsity eight on Saturday morning on the Charles River.

 

Women's Lightweight Crew

  • The MIT women's lightweight crew team captured first place in both the doubles and four races against Gordon College and Boston University on a wet and rainy Saturday morning with a strong cross-headwind and some chop on the Charles River.
     

Women's Openweight Crew

  • On a day where the team celebrated its senior class, the MIT Women's Openweight Crew team swept past Bates College in all four of its races in wet and rainy conditions with a strong cross-headwind and some chop on Saturday morning on the Charles River.

 

Men's Lacrosse 

  • A six-goal run in the fourth quarter created enough of a cushion as MIT went on to defeat Salve Regina University, 16-10, in a NEWMAC men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Junior CJ Sanchez powered the Engineers with three goals, one assist, four groundballs, and two caused turnovers.

 

Women's Lacrosse

  • MIT generated 11 unanswered goals in the second half, helping it defeat Wheaton College, 21-3, in the final NEWMAC women's lacrosse game of the regular season on Wednesday night.
  • Junior Ashley Thomas tallied four goals and three assists, surpassing the single-season assists record of 51 which was set by assistant coach Ana Flooks '19 in 2019.
  • After trading goals to start the game, No. 2 seed MIT rattled off 15 in a row en route to a 21-3 victory over No. 7 seed Salve Regina University in the first round of the NEWMAC Women's Lacrosse Championship on Saturday afternoon. Senior Julianne Flusche tallied five goals, two assists, four draw controls, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers for the Engineers.

 

Softball

  • The two teams were locked in a 1-1 tie into the ninth inning before visiting Brandeis scored the go-ahead run to earn a 2-1 win over the MIT softball team on Wednesday afternoon.
  • The MIT softball team earned its 20th win of the season as the Engineers swept Emerson on the road on Friday afternoon, led by senior Mackenzie Bivin, who finished the doubleheader with six hits, including three doubles in game two to break the program record for doubles in a career. MIT topped Emerson by scores of 9-0 and 6-1.
  • The MIT softball team earned a Sunday doubleheader sweep of Smith College as the Engineers improved to 13-3 in NEWMAC play following victories of 8-1 and 10-4. Junior Olivia Scarpaci launched her sixth homer of the season and tenth of her career, both of which rank second in program history.

 

Men's Tennis

  • The MIT men's tennis team concluded the regular season with a 7-0 road loss to No. 12 Amherst on Thursday afternoon.
  • No. 2 seeded MIT earned a spot in the NEWMAC Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 win over No. 3 Springfield on Friday afternoon.

 

Women's Tennis

  • The No. 7 MIT women's tennis team closed out the NEWMAC regular season by defeating Salve Regina University, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Engineers secured the No. 1 seed for the upcoming NEWMAC Championship, marking their 10th regular season title in 11 seasons.

 

Men's Outdoor Track and Field

  • Junior Nathan Shapiro earned first team All-Conference honors in the long jump to lead the No. 13 nationally ranked MIT men's track and field team on the opening day of the 2025 NEWMAC Men's Track and Field Championships on Friday.
  • Junior Jackson Bliey set the facility record and claimed his third straight NEWMAC high jump title as the No. 13 MIT men's track and field team finished second at the 2025 NEWMAC Men's Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

 

Women's Outdoor Track and Field

  • No. 3 MIT women's track and field senior Alexis Boykin finished in fourth place in the Women's Hammer Throw at the 2025 Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field on Thursday.
  • Junior Katelyn Howard defended her NEWMAC pole vault title and tied the NEWMAC Championship meet record, clearing 4.00m (13'1.5"), as MIT totaled eight All-Conference honors on the opening day of the 2025 NEWMAC Women's Track and Field Championships on Friday.
  • The No. 3 MIT women's track and field team captured its fourth straight and 16th overall NEWMAC title, scoring 278 points to win the 2025 NEWMAC Women's Track and Field Championships on Saturday.
