ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The MIT Sailing team used an incredible final day push, which included a victory on the last race of the day in the Eastern Semifinals to advance to the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Open Fleet Race National Championship, where the Engineers captured 18th. Stanford won the National Championship followed by Navy and Dartmouth.
EASTERN SEMIFINALS (7th of 18, 154 points):
- After day one, the Engineers were 14th overall with 79 points.
- In the 'A' Division, grad student Sam Bruce (Annapolis, Md.) and sophomore Ellie Pinto (Chicago, Ill.) sat 12th with 42 points, collecting a win in the final race of the day. The 'B' Division boat of first year Will Kulas (Jensen Beach, Fla.) and senior Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.) finished the day 14th with 37 points.
- The Engineers made a comeback on the final day to earn a spot in the Championship, jumping seven spots to finish seventh. Kulas and Karlson won the final 'B' Division race to secure a spot in the championship and give them the tie-breaker against George Washington.
- Overall, MIT finished with 154 points. Bruce and Pinto finished with 74 points in the 'A' Division to take sixth, collecting one win and five top-five finishes over the two-days. Kulas and Karlson finished with 80 points in ninth in the 'B' Division with two victories.
FINALS (18th of 18, 206 points)
- The weather did not cooperate on day one, and no races could be completed.
- MIT finished with 98 points in the 'A' Division with Bruce and Pinto on the boat.
- In the 'B' Division, Kulas, senior Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas), and sophomore Elliott Chalcraft (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) finished with 108 points.
