MARLBOROUGH, Mass.  – MIT saw Sabine Smith earn NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Offensive Athlete of the Week honors while Sophia Song was selected as the conference's Defensive Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 3. These are the second honors for both student-athletes this season and in their careers.
 
In a 3-0 week for the No. 9 Engineers, Smith generated 50 kills (4.55 per set), a .266 hitting percentage, 27 digs (2.45 per set), and seven aces. She led all players with 10 kills and added 10 digs, two aces, and a block in a 25-22, 25-17, 25-16 victory at Wheaton College last Tuesday. Smith then produced a match-high 26 kills, a .358 hitting percentage, 11 digs, one ace, and one block on Friday in a 25-19, 22-25, 17-25, 25-18, 16-14 win against Bowdoin College. She capped off the weekend with a match-high 10 kills to go along with a .294 hitting percentage, six digs, four aces, and one block as MIT swept No. 2 Colby College, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21, on Saturday.
 
Song posted 47 digs (4.27 per set) and contributed to a defense that limited its opponents to a .103 hitting percentage. She opened the week with a team-high 14 digs and added four assists at Wheaton. Song then compiled 16 digs, three aces, and five assists versus Bowdoin and wrapped up the weekend with a match-high 17 digs against Colby.
 
MIT returns to action on Tuesday, October 6 when it hosts NEWMAC foe Salve Regina University at 6:00 PM in Rockwell Cage.
