CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- MIT field hockey head coach Sarah Shute has stepped down from her position to become the next head field hockey coach at Division I Boston University.

"While I am thrilled to take this next step in my coaching career, leaving MIT is not easy," said Shute. "My time here has been defined by the brilliant, driven, and resilient student-athletes I've had the privilege to lead. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together."

A 2008 graduate of BU, where she was a four-year standout for the Terrier field hockey program and later a member of the team's coaching staff, Shute returns to BU following a successful six-year tenure at MIT. In six seasons, Shute compiled a 69-28 record, made four appearances in the NEWMAC Championship, and guided MIT to an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2022, where the Engineers advanced to the second round.

"I want to thank MIT Athletic Director, Dr. Anthony Grant, for giving me the opportunity to begin my career as a head coach," continued Shute. "I also want to thank the MIT field hockey community, including the passionate alumni network and parents, as well as the coaches and staff in DAPER for the support they have shown me during my time at MIT."

During her tenure in Cambridge, Shute's student-athletes excelled on the field, earning 22 NEWMAC All-Conference honors, three NEWMAC Rookie of the Year selections, two NEWMAC Athlete of the Year awards, six National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-America accolades, 15 NFHCA All-Region nods and one NFHCA Regional Player of the Year honor.

"Upon her arrival to MIT, Shuter truly embodied DAPER's core values and made an immediate positive impact, not only on the field hockey program, but also on the department and MIT, as a whole," said Grant. She consistently exemplified an unwavering commitment to enhancing the student-athlete experience and positioned her teams for success both on and off the field,"  "Shuter is well-deserving of this opportunity to return to BU to lead the field hockey program at her alma mater. We wish her the best in this next step and look forward to following her continued success."

Off the field under Shute, MIT's field hockey team was recognized by the NFHCA for having the highest team GPA for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 season as 97 student-athletes earned a spot on the NFHCA National Academic Squad and 49 qualified as an NFHCA Scholar of Distinction during Shute's time as head coach at MIT. In all, the Engineers amassed 98 NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Team honors, and two student-athletes were voted to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America At-Large Team.

"Though I'll be moving across the river, I will always be cheering for the Engineers," said Shute. "I am extremely thankful for an incredible six years with the MIT field hockey family."

A search for Shute's successor at MIT is already underway.
