MIT Welcomes Megan Caveny as Head Field Hockey Coach

Cambridge, Mass. -- Dr. G. Anthony Grant, Director of Athletics and DAPER Department Head at MIT, has officially announced the hiring of Megan Caveny as Head Field Hockey Coach/Physical Education and Wellness Instructor. Caveny will officially join the MIT community on April 6.

"We are incredibly excited to welcome Megan to MIT," said Dr. Grant. "As a former Division III student-athlete and key contributor on a national championship winning coaching staff at Tufts, Megan brings a championship mindset, tremendous energy, and a proven ability to develop student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom. Her commitment to holistic development, leadership, and innovation aligns seamlessly with MIT's mission and values. We are confident she will inspire our student-athletes and continue to elevate our field hockey program to new heights."

Caveny comes to MIT after four years as an assistant coach at Tufts. While on the Tufts coaching staff, Caveny was elevated to associate head coach during one of the most successful stretches in Jumbos program history, as Tufts claimed the 2025 National Championship and finished as the 2024 National Runner-Up finish.

"I'm incredibly honored to accept the head coach position at MIT," said Caveny. I'd like to thank Dr. Grant, Senior Associate AD Aaron Aaker, and the rest of the search committee, for choosing me to be the next leader of MIT field hockey. It's a true privilege to be entrusted with such an outstanding program, built on excellence, integrity, and a commitment to growth both on and off the field."

At Tufts, Caveny's primary focus was on attacking, where the Jumbos excelled and increased their goal scoring output from 2022-2025. Tufts finished tops in the NESCAC and 21st nationally in goals per game during the 2025 season. The Tufts' coaching staff earned the last two NFHCA National and Regional Coaching Staff of the Year awards.

"I'd also like to express my sincere gratitude to the Tufts program for everything it has given me over the past four years," said Caveny. "The student-athletes and people there have had a profound impact on shaping me into the coach I am today, and I'll always carry those experiences with me."

Caveny joined Tufts following two years as an assistant at NEWMAC rival Smith College, where she earned her Master's of Science in Exercise and Sport Studies while helping to navigate the program through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic and return to play. Prior to her time in Northampton, Caveny was a volunteer assistant at SUNY Geneseo in 2019 as the Knights won the SUNYAC conference championship and finished the season with a 19-3 record while earning a top 20 Division III national ranking.

The all-time leading scorer for the Vassar College field hockey program with 111 points on 41 goals and 29 assists, Caveny enjoyed a standout four-year career with the Brewers, as Vassar won its first Liberty League conference championship during her senior season before advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Caveny was a team captain as a junior and a senior before graduating in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology with a minor in sociology.

"I'm excited to work alongside such talented student-athletes and a dedicated community at MIT," concluded Caveny. "I look forward to building on the strong foundation already in place while striving for even greater success together."
