GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- The MIT men's lightweight crew varsity eight advanced to Sunday's Men's Collegiate Lightweight Varsity Eight Grand Final with a third-place finish in the team's opening heat on Friday at the IRA National Championship regatta.
The MIT second varsity eight finished fourth in its heat and will race in the Men's Collegiate Lightweight Second Varsity Eight B Final.
VARSITY EIGHT (V8+):

- Results: 3rd of 5 (05:50.500) - Advanced to Men's Lightweight Varsity Eight Grand Final
- Princeton posted a wire-to-wire victory in 05:48.230 in the heat but the Tigers were challenged by second-place Dartmouth (05:50.010) and third-place MIT (05:50.500) as the three crews found separation from fourth-place Yale (05:56.070) and fifth-place Navy (05:56.260) through the second half of the course. MIT and Dartmouth ran side-by-side for most of the heat, with Princeton holding a slight advantage. The three crews will see each other again on Sunday when they join Harvard, Penn and Cornell in the grand final.
SECOND VARSITY EIGHT (2V8+):

- Results: 4th of 5 (06:05.690) - Advanced to Men's Lightweight Second Varsity Eight B Final
- Penn owned the opening heat of the day, leading at the 500, 1,000, and 1,500-meter marks on the way to an open water victory in 05:53.650. The rest of the pack was much tighter, paced by runner-up Georgetown in second (06:01.370) and Navy in third (06:04.360). The Midshipmen clipped MIT for the final automatic spot in the grand final with the Engineers finishing fourth in 06:05.690. MIT had the advantage on fifth place Yale (06:09.670).
