MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – No. 9 MIT saw
Saina Deshpande be named the NEWMAC Women's Tennis Singles Athlete of the Week while
Anastasia Samets and
Katie Driscoll were selected as the Doubles Team of the Week.
In a 3-1 week by the Engineers against four nationally ranked teams, Deshpande produced a 3-1 record at No. 1 singles. Last Monday in a 5-2 victory at No. 29 Redlands, she lost a tough 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 10-4 battle. The next day, Deshpande bounced back with a 6-4, 7-5 victory as the Engineers defeated No. 31 Caltech, 7-0. Facing top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Thursday, she recorded MIT's only point courtesy of a 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-8 win. In a 5-2 victory at No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer, Deshpande capped off the week with a 7-5, 6-2 win.
In the No. 3 doubles position, Samets and Driscoll also generated a 3-1 record. At Redlands the duo lost a tough 7-6 (11-9) battle, but the next day they captured the doubles point with a 6-2 against Caltech. Samets and Driscoll produced a 7-6 (7-5) victory versus No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and then they wrapped up the week with a 6-2 win at Pomona-Pitzer.
MIT returns to action on Friday, April 3 when it visits NEWMAC foe No. 30 Wellesley College for a 4:00 PM match.
